Thanks GreenArc for the straight anwser.

I would think we would want to keep our sick bank system (JCBA) the same instead of reinventing the wheel with DL's type. UAL and CAL's our similar.

With Northwest pilots losing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of accumulated sick time in the merger, we need to keep a close eye on this purse less management take it.

That's interesting. Where did you get that figure from? Not disputing it, but I've never heard it before, and you would think that all the fNWA guys I fly with, one of them would have mentioned it. They have complained about losing certain things, some rightly so, but I've never heard an actual figure placed on the sick time.

I received that figure from a DPMA pilot when they were analyzing the potential effect of additional NW merged pilots on the disability trust fund they run. I have changed the original figure above to "hundreds of millions" since it has been over a year since we had that conversation but it was a staggering number.

You didn't have to change it! I wasn't disputing the number, I just found it interesting that of all the things some complain about, I would have thought that would be a big one. Considering that one of the big complaints was concerning which flight plan software the company was using.

On average, before the bankruptcy, Delta pilots used about 75 sick hours per year. The vast majority of pilots who use sick leave just for sickness, get all of their sick time paid at full pay. There are very few hours paid in any one year that are not at full pay.

In the old NWA system, you would accumulate 5 hours per month or 60 hours per year. That was a true bank system where you kept whatever you did not lose in any one year. For instance, if you went 5 years with no sick outs, you would accumulate 300 hours in your sick bank. I know they had some limits on how many different times a year you could call in sick without talking to your chief pilot but I don't know what that was. At 60 hours per year, if you went 17 years straight without a sick call, you would have 1 year of pay saved in the bank.

Delta also has a mutual insurance program that is voluntary for pilots (Delta Pilots Mutual Aid). You pay a very small premium per month and it fills in the gap between disability (50%) and full pay when you're sick leave runs out in a year. There are a bunch of rules that I don't remember about how you use it, but basically it will mostly fill the gap for one year. This is not a company benefit, but a program run by Delta pilots for Delta pilots.

I think I prefer this DL 240 per year method versus our 60 hours a year route. Have flown with plenty of people with Zero SL due to either illness or bad decisions. It would take 4 years of no SL calls to equal the 240. Don't know too many guys that go 4 years without an SL hit.

I know I didn't have to change that original $770 figure, but after thinking about the dpma conversation well in the past, I thought it more appropriate to change post to "hundreds of millions" instead. Your just quick on the keyboard ,must be the good coffee this morning , to capture the original number.

Either way, the figure blew me away when I heard it.

Answer: The Delta sick leave (SL) system is completely different than both United’s and Continental’s. Delta is awarded SL on an annual basis based on years of service for use in that year only and with no carry over. Continental’s SL is similar to United’s with a continuous monthly accrual but with a cap of 1300 hours versus United’s 1000 hours. There have been no discussions to change to the Delta SL system.
I think the word "YET" should probably be added to the end of that sentence. If we aren't at the real meaty pay, retirement, benefits and scope sections at the table then it certainly is a topic that could come up for face-to-face discussions...at some point in the future.
