Cool Govvie flying job in Oregon

Job lead for any of my West Coast furloughed brethren who may be looking to join me on the government dole as a federal employee. I'm cubicle dwelling, but this is a flying gig in Portland, OR

I hate seeing those salary ranges. They seem misleading because in my mind it leads one to believe that they could be making the top end of the salary in short course; where the truth is that the $93,400 is the ABSOLUTE TOP END perfect salary (based on current numbers) that you would ever see after MANY years on the job. The $93,400 is a GS-12 STEP 10 with 5% flight pay and 22% locality (which no where in Oregon is going to get I'm pretty sure). Even that starting pay is suspect. It is just a little below the GS-12 STEP 1 maxed out pay which seems strange considering most other gov't flying jobs top out in that range, much less start there.
I just bring this out because people need to have realistic expectations of the pay before they jump in with both fet blindly.

How often does the govt furlough? I'll take less money for a relatively secure job, and most likely a management team that values my contribution instead of looking to screw me at every turn.

Not too often, but almost happened a few weeks back!!!!
And don't count on a management team valuing your contribution...

It DID happen for some - though VERY momentarily those few weeks back that Short Bus mentions; but most felt that it wouldn't last too long of course and that back pay would be given if it did last any length of time. It was a surprise though I can vouch for that!

As far as management not valuing your contribution; well I guess that depends on how high up the management team you are talking about. My immediate management (and up to two levels above) seems to be doing a fine job of making me feel apart of the team. So far....I've got no complaints.

I guess my sample size is two. USAF and UAL. Guess which one gave me the red-ass.

I know people were told they were accepted/ not accepted by that Friday, but as far as I know (at least in our office), by the time Monday rolled around, everyone was at work...

Depends on your office. I know some people who like their managers, others who don't. It varies by office and people. In my opinion, military types seem to deal with the position better. I am not used to how the Government is "run".
But, on the flip side, money, benefits, time off are good. I just got off probation today, and hopefully FG-13 pay is around the corner. (Another "bad"- there really is no traditional airline type of seniority/ longevity system)

They just posted positions in all areas...

Exactly - that is how it happened with us too.

Sounds like life

My office / community is heavily influenced by former military, so it has a lot of the same benefits (and problems) as the military, but I think overall a hard working and smart group of people who know their job inside out and are really good at getting the job done.

But, on the flip side, money, benefits, time off are good. I just got off probation today, and hopefully FG-13 pay is around the corner. (Another "bad"- there really is no traditional airline type of seniority/ longevity system)
Well congrats on getting off probation! Tht is certainly one step in the right direction!
