CHICAGO, Dec. 15, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United Continental Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UAL) today announced a new Perfect Attendance Program to recognize United and Continental employees for their dependability and their contributions to the combined carrier achieving operational and customer service goals. The new program will launch Jan. 1, 2011.
Employees with perfect attendance for six months will be eligible to participate in an annual drawing to win a new car, with the company awarding 11 new cars annually.............

Can any Legacy CAL pilots tell what you think of this program and how it's not just an incentive to fly sick? Is there any provision for sick calls, or are there different rules for different employee groups??

We have had a program like this for years. It's not that big of deal as there are still plenty of sick calls. Perfect attendance doesn't enter my mind when I evaluate whether or not I AM SAFE to fly according to the FARs. This is kind of a joke to a lot of guys anyway.

Our "Attendance and Reliability Policy" is essentially:

1-3 sick calls in a rolling 12 month period - no problems
4th sick call - verbal warning
5th sick call - written warning
6th sick call - termination warning
7th sick call - termination

The caveat of course is that the pilot group is a different animal because we have a medical requirement to fly. I have not heard of one pilot being terminated for sick calls for legitimate illness reasons, which of course should be backed up by a physician's note if they get to the "warning stage."

To build on this a bit, if one were to call out for two trips in a row, it is still considered one sick call.

Our most senior flight attendant hasn't called in sick ONCE in over 50 years! Must be nice to have such an incredible tolerance to sickness...........

But, and correct me if I'm wrong, their can't be more than four days off between the two trips.

Where are you guys getting your info from????

It in the Flight Ops site under Attendance and Reliability Policy.

3 calls within 90 days gets you a see me.
5 calls within 180 days gets you a see me.

multiply calls in a row count as 1 call (I don't think it matters how many days off exists between trips).

Maybe the OP will clarify, but the last bit of his post says that pilots are different and presumably have a different sick call policy.

I think even ALPAs legal team could defend against termination of an employee who is legally required to not fly when he/she does not meet the requirements of FAR part 67. As mentioned, if you're toward several sick events in a short period of time, have your doctor help you document the events.

As for the car lottery, I'll take a solid CBA instead (or in addition).

Pay me enough and give me enough time off to purchase and enjoy my own car!

it's not an incredible tolerance to illness. I havent has a sick day since 1993 after having to be "borescoped" (would'a rather BEEN Ill than to do THAT!) I can't tell you I felt GOOD every day. I just didn't feel Bad enough to say I was actually SICK! Most of it is a personal committment to Honor. If I needed a day off then I asked for one and I got one. I used my personal Holidays mainly. My bosses KNEW that unless I needed a day off? I wouldn't ask for one. And the "Lames" I worked for that Didn't? They were always set straight becaue My atendance was ALWAYS better than theirs! And they KNEW I KNEW that too. You guys have people's Lives you're responsible for I'd better NOT find out these Buttwipes EVER forced a pilot to FLY under "threat". Hell! I'd PERSONALLY sue them for "Conspicuous STUPIDITY" If there Isn't a law against that? There Ought to BE!

Sorry......but there's a BIG difference in sitting next to a person in an enclosed environment for 6-10 hours who is severely restricted from what they can take to combat sickness, vs walking around and being able to "self medicate" like you can do. My boss won't "just let me take the day off" like you either. That's why this is a PILOT forum, and not a systems maintenance controller forum. TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT ANIMALS........ sorry to burst your bubble.
