UA/CO Picketing Chicago
#12
I used to fly MIA-IAD in a 767-300. My business (United) has contracted out this "business function" - "commonly one previously performed in-house (see above)" - to Republic, or Skywest, or GOJets etc. (I can't keep up with which of our 9-10 regionals is flying what). They would be what you call an "external provider".
I'm on the outside looking in and most United pilots have no idea nor care who is doing regional flying for them...
I quote a 777 crew "whaoa! What was that?" As a Shuttle America E170 touches down. "That's your 737 flying" no response...
Good luck to you all.
If I was in Chicago today I would be downtown freezing my tail off with the rest of you.
I sincerely hope you all take it back, maybe I'll have a chance at a decent career.

A local UAL captain said that 250 - 300 pilots were there and pretty cold. Mostly UAL 65% with CAL 25% followed by AA and a few others 10%.

In the words of Yoda "That is why you fail". Know thy enemy...and you may have a chance. This is a all to common attitude. Maybe ALPA should issue a pamplet detailing all the companies and exactly how many aircraft and of what type they are operating for a combined United.

Did I miss any? Do you feel better now? Or do you want me to memorize what routes they are all flying this week? You are right, most United Pilots don't know who is doing our regional flying for us because frankly it doesn't matter. We just want it all gone.
If you think most United Pilots don't CARE about the regional flying that's going on, then you ARE on the outside looking in. I don't think you are going to find more than a handful of guys at UAL that won't turn to the SCOPE section first in any TA we reach. The guys that don't are either SUPER senior and flying on their age 65 Lottery Ticket, or company guys who think we should pretty much do whatever the company says anyway. Those numbers, thankfully, are small.
Trust me, eliminating as many RJ's from the regionals is the #1 focus of most of us, so you can stop worrying about my "attitude". I swear (out loud for the voice recorder) every time I see a 70 seat RJ.... I couldn't care less what regional is flying it.

CHICAGO PICKETING
More than 200 pilots from Continental, United and other carriers braved windy conditions and frigid temperatures to walk the line during informational picketing today in Chicago. The successful event, organized by the UAL MEC SPSC in coordination with the CAL MEC SPSC, came on the heels of well-attended events last week in Newark and Houston. All told, more than 850 pilots came together to stand united against management’s plans to continue and expand the practice of outsourcing flying to other airlines.
Management intends to use the CO code on flights from Continental hubs, using outsourced 70-seat jets, a practice the union believes is in violation of the Continental pilots’ current contract and an attempt by management to leverage a position in joint contract negotiations supporting further outsourcing of mainline pilot jobs. The Association and management have agreed to expedited arbitration on the issue and are scheduled to provide an arbitrator with information later this month. A decision by the arbitrator is expected before the end of the month, well prior to the announced start date of the flights.
Look for photos from the event in this Friday's MEC News.

I am impressed by the passion. My comment was not meant to enrage, just an observation. Judging from the heated response there may be hope. I too, would not mind seeing all of the outsourced flying gone...even if it cost me my job. Then there would be a chance to move on and up with my career. The more outsourcing that happen's the longer I have to stay in Purgatory.
I hope you Good Sirs are the majority...for all of our sakes.

I think you have the right sight picture on the issue.
I also hope all UAL and CAL pilots have the same sight picture when any TA for a JCBA comes to them.
Regardless of what other gains any other section of the contract might contain, if section 1 isn't iron-clad in recovering flying, all the rest has a questionable horizon. Getting "x" percent raise, or any other improvement means nothing if there is not some means of reeling in scope.
If the NewCo's current actions regarding trying to put U Express into CAL hubs or the other new JV's isn't enough of an example, I don't know what is.
They will try to take a mile if you give them an inch. Period.

It was 24 degrees today! picketing ANYWHERE in 24 degrees is impressive! I might agree with you? But Picketing in the Cold like that? That HAS to tell me as a Non Pilot that you guys are SERIOUS about the issue!
But a Question if you will, Can't they just use the United Code with a CAL code share flight number?? And? What is the Exact Legal interpetation of the grievence?? And is this winnable in Court?
