I have a buddy who had 7 backup flights to base his second month on on the line at UAL and missed a trip because of Wx delays, cancels, getting bumped from all flights etc... CPO said too bad, commuter clause doesn't apply on probation, got a missed assignment... if he got 2-3 more on probation and he was toast.

My first thought, too. The worst CP by a wide margin, in my opinion. For multiple reasons.

Welcome to United. If you can't be on time, don't be new.
There are plenty of people who have gone decades without missing a trip by commuting in days early and hanging out at their crash pad/hotel/mothers sisters brothers girlfriends house any time loads, or weather in base looked bad etc. You won't find much sympathy for missing a trip, especially when you're on probation.
EWR. Apparently ORD has a similar stance.

That said, that many missed trips will get you noticed. I’ve paid for hotels and even bought a confirmed seat to get to work. I rather pay $100 a ticket than to lose out on millions over the course of my career. Unfortunately, all this is part of the game if you’re a commuter

Hard to believe it was the old EWR CP. I’ve heard nothing, but good things about him.

My buddy had 7 backup flights and it wasn't enough and in that environment he didn't get sympathy. He didn't miss anymore trips on probation after that though.
