At my shop, unfortunately, there is a cadre of CA's who routinely refuse jumpseaters just because. They don't seem to get much or any pushback. Managers simply aren't going to expend much time and affort on forcing a pilot to take a hitch-hiker that's he's not commfortable with. Unless maybe it escalated to a JS war and subsequently impacted pilot sick calls and operational reliability.

Again possibly different animal for online jumpseaters.

Its going to have to be an extremely strong argument as to why too. I heard "X" on APC isn't going to cut it.

So we still don’t know the whole story? What are we still talking about? I think learning has occurred all around and it is time to move on. The idiot blogs, YouTubers, and instagram accounts have enjoyed enough of us putting our fellow pilots down.

Captains don’t have to give any reason for denying a jumpseater… and the union and/or management won’t intervene because they don’t have any authority over the JS… except for the must ride JS riders listed already. In fact, the captain (notice small c) could tell the gate agent no jumpseaters on the flight and not have to deal with any face/face discussions in the cockpit.

Commuting is a choice.

Letting a jump seater into the cockpit is also a choice.

Your ability to get to work isn't my problem.

I think that you missed who needs to provide a reason. A poster said that a FO stating that they were uncomfortable with a jumpseater would lead the captain to deny the jumpseat. The reply was that the person who needs to provide the reason is the FO as to why they don't want the jumpseater in the cockpit. If the captain determines that it is a valid reason, they can then deny the jumpseat. If the captain determines that it is not a valid reason to deny the jumpseat, they can approve it and the FO can then accept that decision, or leave.

I must have missed that tidbit… but agree with the premise.

I aware that Captain doesn't need to provide a reason for denying the jumpseat. But an FO telling a that Captain that they are uncomfortable with a particular person in the Captain's seat, that FO bets have a good and valid reason why the Captain should deny the jumpseat. A FO strictly telling a Captain to deny a jumpseat to a individual due to be being uncomfortable isn't going to fly....
