someone gets a woody because he thinks the captain that went into the dirt was an old white dude. Just putting the record straight.

Wasn't 1987 about the time UAL got hit with a class action lawsuit regarding diversity?

I have a friends dad that couldn't even get UAL to send him an application in 1987(military, instructor, fighters) He was offered CJO by several other carriers NWA, Delta, AA.

He was a white male. Just 1 data point. I'm not making any judgements on DEI or quotas.

UAL also had a do not upgrade list about that time if I heard correctly.

Maybe if any really senior guys are here they can offer insight?

DEI has been around at UAL for a long time.

of course if the RWY is contaminated then you should adjust this.
That seems reasonable, thank you.

Where did you come up with 1,000’ being a “board”? I haven’t heard that before.

1000 feet is called a board foot. In this usage anyway. I believe it's a lumber term. Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong.

The runway distance remaining signs are literally boards with digits on it.

it doesnt say 1,000 it says 1.

EEOC Targets Jobs at United Airlines

L.A. Times Archives
Sept. 13, 1988 12 AM PT

ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON — The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission asked a federal court Monday to hold United Airlines in
contempt for failing to hire enough blacks and women as pilots.

In a motion filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, the commission charged that United has failed to abide by a 1976 consent
decree in which the airline agreed to hire qualified minority and women pilots at double the rate at which they applied for the jobs in relation to white males.

Of course, only problem with that is the pilot in question was actually a CAL hire and the story/NTSB is wrong about his hire date (or at least doesn't reflect when he was hired as a pilot at CAL). Maybe he had some other job here before becoming a pilot, but he was hired as a pilot in 1998.

No boner here, big guy - and have no clue or care what ethnicity. Just rebutting all the guys who immediately assume crap. Fact of the matter is it was a PILOT who made some pi$$ poor decisions.
