I know you guys had a rough week over the big U...but this one is the event we pilots can learn from! Don't request to roll it to the end and then take the turn on wet a runways at 30 knots...got it.

The kool aid they serve you guys must be good!

Senior pilots have a tendency to consistently display complacency (from my experience, of course). That said, give me a senior guy all day every day when it comes to abnormal or hairy situations.
Talk about blanket statements....I flew with a ton of senior experienced captains and the vast majority I never detected overconfidence or complacency, and many displayed a fair degree of conservatism. Those that did were probably no different 10000 hours prior.

Who nominated them? Management? Chief Pilot? Has the CP every flown with the guy? Flown with him multiple times? Was the candidate recommended by his peers?

SW guys told me new CKA candidates are posted in the CP's office. "Come talk to us." Basically guys only went in to drop a dime on the guy. Guy said he went back and forth and then thought "the new guys, and FO's, don't desire to have this guy ****ting on them." So he goes into the CP office feeling badly. Tells the CP he's not comfortable but figured he had to speak up. "Don't worry. You're the #5, (#7, #9??) guy to come in. Don't worry, he'll never be a CKA."

Guys seeking the position aren't necessarily the answer you make then out to. Had an FO saying he was going to apply to be a CKA. We (myself, FO, FB) had a couple of beers and then the FO left. I told the FB "you heard him talk about wanting to be a CKA. What do you think?" "Good god NO!!" Fast forward a year or two and someone's giving the rent-a-cop security a hard time "sorry, but they're not on the list to go inside." "What LIST!?! I'm a pilot here! I've been here for 25+ years! How long have you been here? *I* have a Top Secret security clearance! *YOU'RE* telling ME that *I* can't take my mother in here?!!?" I look over....it's him. F/A's kept singing Willie Nelson's 'You're always on my mind" but had rewritten for him - "I'm always on MY mind...." Shows up last at the gate security....cuts in front of everyone to go first. Self-centered cluelessness. Yeah, he wanted to be a CKA...his peers were horrified of the thought.

I think the best process would be FO's nominate, candidates get posted, and no secret hand shake candidates get selected.

Damn you’re smart!! I’ll add that little nugget to my cap! Because over here at United we just lick windows and cross our fingers.

we certainly aren’t as good as the pilots that trained you and the pilots at your airline!

Terrain is 20 miles west to northwest of the airport. Both ND's can be see from either seat. Here's a strange concept - one ND on terrain and one ND on weather radar.

Sensitive bunch, are we! Let's try to learn what contributed to this mistake so nobody else makes it.

That is the standard procedure in Milan. The departure does have interesting speed and altitude restrictions that can be a issue. Sometimes people get tunnel vision with non standard departures.

The question of the day was the runway a DEI hire?

Fake news. Initially due to the circulating pairing showing the crew. Turns out it was inaccurate. He was junior.
