Offline jumpseat checkin
#11
It’s my understanding that our computer system won’t even let a gate agent check you in more than an hour prior. They can list you, but can’t check you in. So, is this guy simply listing? Or is he checking in? In theory, yes. He could have a United gate agent list him the day before. In which case it doesn’t really matter because offline jumpseat priority is based on time of check in, not time of listing. He still has to be first in line at the podium an hour prior to check in and have priority. In which case, unless he’s tripping and pushing over other pilots to get there first, he’s really not doing anything wrong.
Now, if he is actually checking in more than an hour prior, two possibilities come to mind. He has a family member who works for UAL or a UAX carrier, he has UAL travel benefits as a result, and is using those rather than the traditional jumpseat route. Or, he’s buying ID90s rather than actually jumpseating. Both will allow him to check in 24 hours prior.

Back when we had to check in with a CSR for UAX jumpseats, it wasn’t unheard of for guys to check in early at other gates, a customer service desk or even with the CSR working their go home leg before they finished their trip. No idea if that’s still possible but I wouldn’t be surprised.
