QOL of a new hire 737 CA EWR?
I know similar questions have been posted before. But mine mostly focuses on someone from the outside looking in. With my class date approaching I am hearing more and more about forced upgrades and I do qualify. If this were to come to pass I had a few questions. For some context, I am within the 2.5 hr call out for EWR and am a regional guy, so abuse is sort of normal.
1. In the contact it talks about reserves having 13-14 days off depending on the month. Are those usually broken up into small reserve chunks or large multi day reserve periods?
2. How many short calls are you assigned a month usually?
3. I have heard a few different answers to this, but how is the seat lock handled as a new hire awarded a CA position? 2 years after award, or 2 years after CA OE (basically 3 years after award since ~1 would be as FO)
4. How often are short calls assigned min call outs?
This one is open ended for discussion, but besides the big jump in pay, is there any sort of benefit to bidding the CA seat as a new hire? I assume the whole time in the left seat would be spent on reserve.

1) Depends on how you bid, but you'll get a mix of a few days off and possibly up to six reserve days at a time.
2) Depends on the month, the number of people on reserve, and anything that may be going on. New contract limits them max of six assigned, but you can pick up however many you want.
3) I'm not sure, have to look at the contract.
4) In my experience, not often, but again it depends on what's going on (weather, holiday, etc.). From my experience, I've very rarely flown on short call, but it depends on fleet/seat/base.
Besides the money and beinig called Captain (if that's your thing), no. You'll be on reserve a long time, working close to every weekend and holiday. Almost everyone that bids captain in that base will continue to push you down for some time.
