Default Checkride Failures

Asking for a friend... Been wondering how the majors, United, are about hiring with previous checkride failures. Anyone know of anyone or have failures themselves that flys for the company?

yes.

none of the passenger airlines are in the position to hire only people with utterly unblemished records

I have a failure. Not my finest moment by a long mile, but it happened. I owned it and explained how I used it to be a better pilot. They really liked my answer from what I could tell. Good luck!

It sorta depends. If you screwed up your first go at Commercial or CFI 7-8 years ago and have successfully completed a couple of type ratings and 2000 hours of 121 time since then it's no big deal. If you failed a checkride or recurrency six weeks ago you better have a hell of a good reason why and even that might not be enough.

Depends. I've it's old news you're probably okay. If it's recent, probably not so much. I know someone who failed the same CFI checkride 4 times and he's at United. I know someone who failed 5 different check rides including a 91/135 and a 121 checkride within the 3 years prior to meeting UAL at a Job fair... the recruiter very frankly told him that he wasn't what UAL was looking for.

Yes, as long as you have a good explanation, admit it was something you did (not blaming examiner, etc) and what you learned from it (VERY important) failures are not a big deal anymore. It actually makes you more human, and my interviewer even said in the past they missed out on a lot of good pilots because of dismissing on failure(s).

One failure in the past is not a big deal. A pattern of failures can be a deal killer. The airlines have learned what works and what does not work from the last 3 years. Multiple failures in the past likely is a problem child in the future.

if this is worth anything. I have 3 failures, a primary checkride, CFII, and my intial loe at my regional. Granted, these busts are all spaced out over years. the first one happening back in 2017. I spoke with a united recrutier a few months ago at a job fair and he asked me about them. I explained my position and he told me to not worry about the failures. So, hopefully it won't hold me back.
