Remember also that the company must continue to post Captain slots as available from anybody that got a Captain assignment as a new hire that doesn't want it. So, not only would they have to run out of Captain slots they want to fill for growth/retirements (unlikely in the near term) but they would then continue to have to advertise the previously awarded New Hire Cap slots that were "forced" on pilots as their original assignment.

Since the last vacancy bid had 187 unfilled Captains, I don't think there is any risk of running out of Captain slots in New Hire classes anytime soon. If you are the youngest in the class I would speculate that it is a higher risk that you get a Captain slot "forced" on you than it is that you don't have any Cap slots available. If you are the oldest then you will likely have a choice of 756FO in EWR, 737/A320FO in random bases including IAH or 737 CA in ORD,DEN,SFOor EWR.

I am sure every class will have variations and since 50 different pilots will have 100 different opinions on what is best, I could definitely see that even with the same exact choices available in succesive weeks, one week could run out of Captain slots quickly while the next would have the bottom 10 (eligible) get Captain slots forced on them

I must admit I am in shock that so many Captain slots are available!

You’ll hear some melodramatic comments, but all things equal, there are some valid reasons for it.

Default App locked

Been asked a couple of times on this thread but never got an answer.

How long does it take to hear anything from the app lock to a Hogan test mail?

Default Class date

Interviewed 1/9
CJO 1/18
Received class date for 4/23 on 1/30
When I clicked on the class acceptance link the class was already full. That by itself put me 50 seniority #s behind the folks that interviewed same day I did.
Still haven't gotten another email for another class date.

I’m not. WB offers superior QOL. For an extra $40/hr, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

I didn’t work at all in January bidding reserve and made decent coin getting paid for all the unused SCs. If you’re senior enough you can bid a non-profile reserve line to avoid all the garbage trips.

A non-profile reserve line is, if you’re senior enough, you can bid days off regardless of the company profile. Example: company wants 1 reserve Dec 6th but 20 reserves Dec 25th, and all reserves available on the weekends. With a non-profile reserve line, you’ll get Dec 25th and weekends off if it’s legal contractually and FAR wise. Only available to something like the top 10% reserve bidders.

For all the posters about to pile on about sleep disruptions, how NB is better, I get it. Main takeaway is we have options at UAL which is amazing.

I know this is an interview thread, but here is more of a glimpse from the inside.

Welcome. Keep checking back. Might not hurt to let them know you’re willing to start earlier if a spot opens up. You’ll be A-OK!

Congratulations! I’m very happy here - the last 5 years have seen a significant positive change for this company.

We have so much variety here that’ll you’ll be able to find what works for you. It took me a decade plus to realize WB reserve is a great gig.

My advice to anyone reading is do whatever it takes to live in base as soon as you can. Not working on reserve is great. Commuting to not work on reserve is borderline depression.
