I am a CFI a few months past ATP mins. It's tough to get a first airline job out there, I'll tell you that. But my main question is...

The golden wave has passed. It seems like it's virtually a guarantee that regular joe-schmoes like me will never have a realistic shot at a legacy. A year/two years ago guys with DUIs and 3 checkride failures were making legacies with 800 turbine hours, and now guys like me with a pristine record... Are we screwed? Is that what this is coming down to?

UA was the dream. Many of my long time life friends work there. I am 33, and I feel so behind right now but due to life, I just couldn't make the jump until 2019 to start flying.

Do I have any prayers hope or chance of making a legacy, specifically UA? If I do make it, am I doomed to being on reserve for 5+ years and being a double furloughee? With all these hires they've made the last few years and everything slowing down now it sure feels like the rest of us are ****ed..
Im 42 and have only been flying almost 8 years. Just work your butt off and remember that hard work pays off. I got my United CJO in March.

calm down. You have as much time left as you’ve been alive. You have FAR more time left than I do (retired mil). Even being a narrowbody FO for 20 years would net you millions, not to mention your 401k direct contributions. Will you ever be a line holding widebody Captain? Who knows? But honestly, people freak out when they think they won’t retire in the top 50 in company.

take a breath and keep going. Or quit, I guess, if you think the above isn’t something you can deal with.

No one can answer this tbh. Anything can happen in the industry and trying to predict it is impossible. That said, I would look into United Next and what SK wants to do with the company. This should give you an idea of what to expect and how to prep for it. Everything you do now is to set up to be a UA pilot. So make every moved with intention.

Ans for the love of God DO NOT join Aviate and stay away from SkyWest. Those pilots are metered or never make it on. I would recommend Republic, AA WO, or something similar.

Good luck!

What about the ULCC/LCCs? ACMIs?

Republic is metered just like SkyWest is.

This is a joke, right?

Do you have an aviation mentor? Mine was my dad, and it wasn’t him just talking about aviation. It was watching him get furloughed and LTD’d, too. I knew what I was signing up for when I started. Now, that doesn’t comfort you, but get on Climbto350, start networking, and look beyond an airline. If you can’t get an airline interview maybe look for a position that’s gonna challenge you. You’ll have to move, compete, and perform, but at some point when in the pattern as a 1500TT CFI if it never occurred to ya that you aren’t growing as a pilot, you need to start becoming the pilot you need to be. Make those moves and watch your fortunes change. Or stay in the pattern, if that’s what you’re safe doing.

Good luck.

Hiring is returning to normal levels. Plenty of “regular Joe-shmoes” get hired at the legacies during normal times. The key is to stand out. Once you make it to a regional consider becoming a check airman, chief pilot, sim instructor, union work. Basically anything to boost your resume.

Speaking of union work, are there any positions to avoid?

You're a bit (a lot) over the top with your assessment of the hiring environment. The last couple years was far from the norm. You're not screwed. You and a bazillion other "pristine records" are out there and want the same job - just math. Over the mean - a few years here and there excluded - it's been competitive. You still have the mandatory retirement bubble that 10s of thousands before you didn't have.

You're only 33, you have every chance in the world. Just be aware of you're audience when you do make it. You'll still be flying with plenty of dudes that actually went through the wringer, not just thinking they're screwed because they didn't get hired directly into a WB at a legacy at 25.
