this whole 'forced' assignment argument is overblown.

I’m mostly kidding with that comment….but it’s also basically accurate.
Quite a few of us were THRILLED to get hired here, regardless of the crappy assignment we were stuck with for the first 2 years. I had to commute to FO reserve…halfway across the country…for the entire 2 years….and I LIVE in a United domicile. Nobody paid me $300k a year to do it. I was still ecstatic to get my chance.

Take all of the blame and 1/2 of the credit.
Your crew and then your passengers (in that order) are your family and treat them as such.
Buy your halfwinger all the meals when you are on the trip.
When it’s your FO’s leg - do the walk around no matter the wx

Curious… If UA has 100+ unfilled CA vacancies, who exactly will forced upgrades attract? If anything, this will turn candidates away.

What is your greatest piece of advice for first time Captain upgrades at United?
United has thousands of highly experienced pilots retiring in the years ahead. With new hires likely soon to be on an accelerated track to the left seat, now more than ever, mentorship and transfer of knowledge is critical.
For those that have United Captain experience, what is some advice you’d give to someone now upgrading? Something you wish you’d have been more prepared for or someone would have told you before moving to the left seat?
I’m not confident there won’t be thread drift and infighting about the TA, but maybe there could be some nuggets of solid info here for junior pilots aspiring for the left seat.

I’ve said for many years that one of the biggest threats to our operations is the perception that we need to rush. I have 2 speeds: Slow and Off. Don’t let agents, ground crew or ATC rush you. YOU set the pace. And don’t rush your F/O. If he/she needs more time, set the brake and let them catch up. Be patient, be kind, be funny and always have fun. If you’re not having fun, then it’s time to go home.
