If you are a current United pilot, which I gather you are since you referenced your ‘no’ vote, (or really anyone hired before August 2024 at the earliest), then I’m not sure about the second part of your statement. There’s nothing to force you to upgrade.

Yeah didn’t you read? We just collect our money- the crap slides down to the new hires.

It's a brave new world when it is now considered "crap slides down to the new hires" when they are hired into an off the street captain position.

Perspective is a wonderful thing, and in this case, a real 1st world problem.

Now they will be able beotch at all the taxes they have to pay.

If they want it, great, but we never used to let the company force upgrades- people took it because it was an amazing opportunity. Now instead of trying to preserve it as such, seems we’re good to just force it on the new guys.

Idea: as long as we’re forcing upgrades, how about we just force senior WBFOs into the NBCA seat? I mean, 1st world problems- they should have nothing to complain about, right?

I have to agree with the other poster. New hires have always been forced into the scraps; whether that is global reserve in SFO, years of reserve on a NB in EWR etc. the recent times of new hires getting decent seniority in any base they want is pretty new. At least if they’re forced into NB Captain they’ll have better reserve rules, PS commuting for a year, and better pay. I’m not unsympathetic but pretty much every new hire up until recently had a year or two of crummy QOL, they all happily did it because the rest of the career makes up for it. So some 25 year old 8 ball has to sit reserve in EWR on the 73 for a few years? They’ll have another 30+ to do whatever they want here.

don’t like it? Don’t come work here. Employment is a choice.

My frustration has nothing to do with new hires getting the “scraps”. It’s about allowing the most important seats at the airline to erode into unwanted leftovers. The mere reality of NBCA being considered “scraps” should give us all pause. Work rules & compensation should be enough to entice the most experienced pilots into the left seat. Instead we’re setting the bar at “hopefully new hires won’t quit when we force them to do it for two years”. This is the wrong way to fill captain vacancies.

Your fix is pay more. As I mentioned earlier, the company would have had to pony up another 1.5 Billion dollars for this contract.(doubtful)

I think the problem could have been fixed with better reserve rules for a fraction of that cost. An extra HDO and the LC similar to Delta.(more of a possibility because it would be industry standard)

My fix is any combination of improved pay/work rules that does the job. During TUMI people also said there was no way the company would pony up more $$$. They didn’t until they did.

But I wouldn’t pay another dime, either if I thought I could get pilots to vote for forced upgrades. And their gonna get it, too, which I guess makes me just smart enough to know I’ve been outsmarted.
