Nah, I think in this case most of us "younguns" value our hearing and will act accordingly. I haven't met a single Gen X or younger pilot who didn't use a high quality noise cancelling headset.

I meant in general, as in attitude and behavior.

The headset deal is being blown out of proportion though. If people want to wear headsets or not is a personal choice. You can still wear a headset while others don’t without issues. Just speak up so that all can hear. Those who don’t wear one should speak loud enough so those who do can clearly understand, while those who do wear them can’t just mumble into the intercom.

they’ve done studies, even in “quiet” aircraft like the Airbus pilots hearing in their open ear is generally worse than the one protected by the ear dic.

Every single communication related snafu I have had here has been with pilots using the ear dic. Every single one. I am not a soft talker either.

It needs to get added to the FSAP form and ALPA needs to start taking hearing loss/communication seriously.
So,,without the “eardic “ as you call it..(I used a custom molded ear piece.) without that, how can you hear the interphone …over the speaker?

a headset.

like the kind I wore all the time for 8+ hours of block a day in the RJ. The absolute minimal discomfort is a small trade off for being able to hear ATC the first time without whining about “they’re holding the mic too far away” or “I can never understand their accents here” when in reality it’s just distortion from the ****ty monoaural speaker turned up to 80db to drown out the wind noise.

im not saying sit there on headsets halfway to Hawaii when you’re on CPDLC and not doing a whole lot, but the number of guys that will go headset off speaker on at 18 on a 45 minute flight through busy airspace surprises me.

Whatever, walk off the trip. Not sacrificing my hearing to appease you. You’re replaceable, my hearing is not. I hear as well with you yelling through the headset with no intercom as most of the ear dic guys can with nothing in their ears.

Or, alternatively, I will 100% cite your refusal to use the intercom in our inevitable FSAP because you either can’t hear ATC and jack up a clearance or I have to ask for gear 6 times. I see it all the time from the jumpseat. The ear dic crews have a much higher frequency of missed calls, misunderstood calls, and missed crew communication than the headset crews.

Peop”e sure are wound tight aboutheadsets.

Well, some of us have personal experience with dumbasses not using them at inopportune times, missing ATC calls, missing flap/gear call, whatever.

In this case, it led to almost losing a 777 and potentially billions of dollars in business through lost confidence. So yeah, why wouldn't we be tightly wound about something that's easily fixable?

The only argument against it has essentially been "i do what I want, hehehehehe". That's highly annoying to those of us who have been put in an unsafe or easily avoidable situation by someone because of CRM and them not being able to hear anything due to their refusal to use a headset and/or intercom.

I used a custom molded ear piece for almost 40 years, and never had trouble hearing ATC or the other crew. The boom mike worked perfect as well. The only time I had difficulty is when. an FO wore a head set over both ears, and would have trouble hearing.

But, some of you guys are making too much of the missed flap setting. It ain’t that big a thing. Flaps sometimes jam or stop on retraction due to assymetry. I’ve never seen someone loose control of the plane, because of it…even in the sim.

This is sounding like a discussion about motor oil in a car forum.

Bazinga! Losing control of a 777 because flaps 15 was set instead of flaps 5, an extreme common error on a flaps 20 take off, is absolutely unbelievable. Headsets or not you don’t dive an airplane into the ocean because you ordered a coke and got a Pepsi.
