If the job of captain is too much you can always downgrade.
When I was “playing AAA ball” I was almost always flying with 100-500 hour 121 FO’s. Mentoring, taking the airplane when necessary, all that jazz was part of the job of being captain. This is the cost of admission of higher wages, better seniority, fleet expansion, etc during a pilot shortage.

Former UAL Captain Laura Savino has a YouTube channel now focusing on safety. She confirms that the 767 F/O was a former male F/A who was hired at UAL and was flying the jet. And that they had major problems in training. She believes that they have been fired but it didn't sound like she was 100% on that. In this video she covers this hard landing, the Delta flight into hail in Italy, and the Delta 757 wheel fire/evac in ATL:

side note: CA Savino seems to be an opportunistic trash heap.

The United hiring department strikes again! They’ve really outdone themselves this time if any of what she quoted is accurate. What an absolute disgrace. I suppose these zero to hero, low time, zero T-PIC, no college degree with a few check ride busts for good measure kids are not considered the lowest your hiring department will stoop.

They didn’t just have major proficiency issues in the United schoolhouse. She’s claiming he was terminated for performance issues from a separate employer with an ugly training record before being hired at United. That’s a remarkable record to look past. Freshly terminated for their flying skills and they’re hired on at United Airlines. What is this place becoming? Mainline Mesa?

He's a troll, and not a great one at that, but there is some evidence to support that type of hiring.
I talked to a CA a month or so ago on the hiring committee who did interviews at TK, and basically their policy was to hire people straight up unless they dorked up the interview so badly that it was unavoidable. The going theory is "let the training department sort em' out". Which, if you now allow a ton of retries and additional sim time, could result in a person who doesn't know how to fly getting to the line. I've seen training standards get lowered due to pressure before in the military, and if it can happen there, it can certainly happen here.
