There are a few int’l destinations which, for security reasons, a lot of people tend to stick to the hotel- SAL, SAP, POS; maybe some Mexico- so long layovers especially can be kind of dull. Of those, SAL is a very long drive to the hotel & POS is, in my opinion, one of the rougher red-eyes due to its length & the fact that you’re going east to west.
Some like to avoid LatAm altogether because of ATC differences & customs hassles, but some places like BOG, LIR are quite popular. Other than that it’s all just preference. You find the places you like & the ones you don’t.

These threads are honestly kind of silly. Are you really going to avoid certain layovers/hamstring your bidding ability based on what some random internet weirdos tell you? All you’re going to get are responses from people who have no idea what things you’re looking for in an overnight and are going to parrot things like “Avoid XYZ at all costs!” because their wife’s boyfriend’s cousin got food poisoning from a taco served out of a dumpster there once fifteen years ago.
I have some overnights I avoid but I don’t add something to that list until I’ve been there personally. And one pilot’s trash is another’s treasure- I don’t mind MMMX, but people avoid it like the plague. It’s not nearly as hard of an airport as it’s made out to be and the overnight hotel is beautiful. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed 20 hours there, had steak and margaritas for $25 at a fine dining restaurant two blocks away, gone for a jog, and lived to tell the tale on multiple occasions. You ask some people and they’re convinced as soon as you cross the threshold out of the lobby that you’re going to get kidnapped and decapitated by a drug cartel. And food poisoning.
By finding some of these diamonds in the rough you can get some great schedules because people just blanket bid avoid them.
That being said here are a few of my favorite overnights (not sure which you’d have out of IAH).
BZN- fun little downtown. Great hotel. Outdoorsy opportunities if you have a long one. Crystal Bar is a cool little dive.
GEG- see BZN.
BIL- like BZN if BZN exiled all their Californians. Cool military surplus store, have yet to find great food but Doc Harper’s tavern makes some mean martinis.
DEN (short)- incredible hotel with a great fitness center. Just don’t forget to draw the curtains..
SBA- great hotel on the beach.
EUG- great hotel. Fun downtown area, college town, lots of decent bars and restaurants. Treat yourself to the self guided animal house tour.
PHX- hotel is only decent and kind of hates us but lots to do in the area.
MSY- hotel is a little tired but you’re walkable to bourbon street and the excellent WWII museum. Check out all the neat WWII planes at the Boeing pavilion. Check out Turkey and the Wolf if you’re in the mood for sandwiches.
BTV- hotel will loan you out bikes, there’s a beautiful lakefront path.
AUS- great downtown location. Check out Tiki Tatsu-ya if you like cocktails (it made Esquire’s essential bar list a few years ago). Walkable to a Whole Foods if you want to get something healthy. Rentable bikes if you want to get some exercise. Fitness center is meh.
YVR- Some of the friendliest people you’ll meet. Has preclearance back to the states for most flights which is great. J/S agreement with the local seaplane people (verify which one and details first). I haven’t gone for a ride but I know many people who have and said it was a blast.
With all that being said I will proactively try to avoid EWR but that has nothing to do with the overnight, I just don’t want my trips broken apart and reassigned when the operation inevitably melts down.
