I did that many times while living in LAS. I would pick up LAX, SFO, DEN, IAH 100% PPU trips from LAS. Many left less than 5 hrs after i commuted in.

It’s actually both. I’m senior enough to get PPU trips, but due to my commute I can’t get to base unless it’s advertised 24 hours out.

Well that’s not the example I said. You were already there, at least that seems like what you’re saying. If you can get to the airport and get to base within 5 hours of notification, I’d say that’s pretty rare.

That was from my house, 30 min from the airport.

When I'd see trips pop up in PPU, I'd check on flights. If it was possible, I'd continue to monitor the trips until they went 100%. Others have better systems than me, but it worked for me.

And ALPA is making it worse by trying to eliminate 50 and 75% PPU.

Let me get this straight, making all PP 100% instead letting CS chum for the lowest bidder is bad?

I am personally all in for a system like DAL. 100% and buckets after a set amount so the same people can’t line up at the trough.

Commuters can do any of the following: Commute in the night before, move to base, drive in, or move to a commuter location where you can make 2 flights by 1000.

Also, like others have said, the fatigue from people who then elect to commute in day of (rather than do any of the above options) will get worse. The lesson out of Colgan 3407 should have been that long commutes leading into a long duty people lead to fatigue and should not happen.
We didn't "get" 10am day 1, we already had it. It doesn't matter that it was an FAR issue and not contractual. We don't need to write in the UPA you can't fly drunk or over 1,000 hours in 365 days. The standard the has been set is 1300-1400 day 1 and we're well below it. If they actually want commuters to upgrade this would be the biggest thing to change, most people can't get to base same day with 2 flights by 10am.

move to base, or commute in day prior. not sure I see the problem.

If anyone but very senior pilots upgrade they’ll be dealing with early shows, late releases, or both. I really don’t understand this fixation with coming in late for the first day of reserve. If you can’t pick up a trip or get to base in time, go the day prior and get a hotel room. Looking at the bid packs, those shy of the 50% mark get plenty of trips that are not commutable on the front end. Commuting is a perk that allows us to live where we want to. It also requires responsibility on our part to show up for our trips and be fit for duty. I’m all for a safety net commuter policy, but it isn’t up to the company or our fellow pilots to ensure that we get to work.

unless you’re super senior, yes. When I was a super junior lineholder I occasionally picked up some 50% stuff (this was well before tumi). I never would’ve been able to touch 100% no matter how much they gave out.

im all for a system like Delta’s, but that wasn’t in the notes. Maybe it just wasn’t detailed in there, but based on what was in the notes it seems like a give to the 1% of super senior lineholders so they can snag a few more 100% trips before the junior people willing to do it for 50 or 75% would have a shot at it.
