If his team was any good they could've come up with an itinerary where he shows up in some employee work areas then onto a plane discretely. I think the jumpseat idea would've been good too..
General terminal areas would've been a no go to me.

This is just a pr error that we can hopefully use to our advantage. The idea that his presence 'on the ground' in EWR wouldve helped is a joke. It would've just caused a huge, counterproductive distraction. Just a few weeks ago I watched a young, well-meaning Captain go to the gate area to explain a delay for cleaners. He handled himself well... but most of us know how that unfolded.

Wasn’t he going to DEN or something to help work the problem? What should he have done, sit stuck in EWR or where ever with his passengers in solidarity? How would that be helpful? It’s not like he was going on vacation. Optics are not flattering but this is much to do about nothing.

I don’t care about him flying on a private jet, assuming he paid for it out of pocket. But to leave the biggest hub during an operational meltdown has really bad optics. He may have done nothing, but had he been on property behind the scenes shaking peoples hands and saying thanks for the hard work, I think that would have meant a lot.

Unpopular opinion: I don’t give 2 dookies if he took a chartered flight to do the job of running the airline. He doesn’t get to skip his meetings just because things are running poorly- probably especially so. But optics are tricky. What he should have done is chartered the biggest jet he could, bussed in a bunch of passengers who were trying to get to where he was going, & staged a “meet & greet” on board where he answered their questions about what happened & what’s being done to solve it. He goes from out of touch exec to CEO who cares.

My experience from my previous and current employer has required multiple security checkpoints just to be in the same building as the CEO. With the world we live in I don’t necessarily think there’s anything wrong with that.

Is that not considered a security issue? I’m not asking that to be snarky.

Scott Kirby sets the example… He’s too important/busy to hand out drinks and make stand up PAs and give delay updates so none of UALs Captains should either.
