Can someone explain what Global Reserve is?
I’m about to submit my app to United as I am interested in trying for the WB out of EWR as soon as I can get it. A few people have been taking about Global or International Reserve and how much is sucks, but I’m not really sure beyond that. I live about 2.5 hr drive from EWR.

Usually it means that a reserve in XYZ domicile can be deadheaded to another domicile to start a trip (and then DHD back at the end).
Bad for several reasons...
Possible long duty days, DHD counts for FDP but not block.
More days away since you're likely to need hotel on the front and/or back end.
In your own domicile you can usually looks at open time and available reserves and predict your odds of getting called. Can't really do that if they can send you anywhere.
Upside is that you might get paid a lot, if DHD pay doesn't count as credit for the month.

Global refers to any category that does “global” flying. Essentially Europe, Asia, Deep South America (I’m too lazy to look at the exact definition but that pretty well covers it). Basically any 777 or 787 base is global. 756 is global in EWR/IAH/IAD and CLE737 has been global the past 2 summers when the Max goes to Tenerife (I’m pretty sure that’s where it goes, again too lazy to look it up) since CLE 737 flies the trip. What it affects is how your days off can be bid. On a global fleet you only get 6 Holy Days off (HDO) and they must be bid as 1 continuous block. Your other days off are bid as regular days off (RDO). You can be flown into RDOs in a global category (it must be a global trip though). You get the days off restored but kinda sucks if you bid for it off for something and end up having to fly. Basic categories can spread HDO’s out into multiple blocks and have one Flexible day off that can get rolled.
The disclaimer is this is all current per our current contract. Who knows what changes in the next contract whenever that comes.

I’ve done global reserve in both the right and left seats over the last 10 years… they don’t roll the days off as much as many will claim on these forums… maybe a day/two per month max is what I’ve experienced. I do live in base and kids are grown… so if you need hard/immovable days off each week then maybe WB reserve isn’t for you… so bid wisely. Who knows what new rules will be… I’m hearing they’ll still be able to roll days off but might have a pay penalty or cap… still not resolved.

a) how long until ORD for NH on 756
b) what reserve rules they would have once to ORD
Thanks for good description of Global Reserve as it stands at United.
