First year 756 FO here on Global Reserve and a commuter (3 to 4 hour drive with family in base). Global Reserve has been manageable for me far this year. I’ve only been rolled once. With some knowledge of the contract and 117. I’ve managed to figure out how to make my days unrollable for majority of the year since I’ve been rolled once in January. I’ve learned reserve game and scheduling’s habit patterns to the point where I was able to go from February to May not flying once. I’ve learned which SC shifts to APU in order to turn myself into a pumpkin for the last day and a half.

The biggest issues I am seeing is the manipulation of the grid with makes it damn near difficult to trade, drop trips for line holders and move days around for reserve. On top of that, our CBA gives crew schedule too much authority to move goal posts on what you can or can’t do such as having a single day off between reserve blocks to maximize time off in other blocks…. Unpredictability of LC to SC conversions or just straight up abuse where they will convert every reserve on a particular day to SC except those who are pumpkins. Of course, your off days being rollable without big compensation is BS.

A lot of this is manageable if one lives in base. Or have an easy commute with a comfortable crash pad.

Reserve life right now is bad. Count on being assigned a short call, field standby or a trip all 18 days. Long call is a fiction, does not exist. Global reserve rules leave you at he company’s whim 24-25 days a month….commuting to that is horrendous., third world.

So it’ll be better as a line holder you say. 85-90 hour lines are normal. Trip trading is also a fiction, No way to improve your schedule. Only way to improve is to be in the top 25% or so of your BES. Frequent reassignments, many of which are into days off, which the company is loathe to restore.

Everyone is overworked and jerked around. Go anywhere else if you can.

Multiple posts here like this. Don’t calmly assess the future, just PANIC! It makes one wonder how these people think things through on a flight deck.

I’m not saying that my experience will be the same as everyone else’s…and certainly we need significant improvement in our reserve rules… but from reading this post it feels like we work at two different airlines

I don’t think you’re doing this right. In my whopping 14 months on property so far, the only month I had a line was in December because I screwed up my bid. Looking back at Crew Companion for that month, I had 1 successful pilot-to-pilot trade, 2 straight drops, 3 straight pickups, and 8 regular trades go through, for a total of 14 modifications (improvements) to my schedule. Total probably would have been even higher, but covid took me out for a good chunk of the month. And again, I was about halfway through probation at this point, so definitely not senior.

Not saying that no one’s getting screwed or that we don’t need better work rules, but maybe you need to rethink your trading strategy/criteria.

Or maybe he shouldn’t. We actually WANT people senior to us to not have a clue what they’re doing…..

I think a lot of it is categories that aren’t used to massively high LPV lines or bad reserve coverage not knowing the trickier strategies.

I was always able to get pretty good schedules but it required a lot of creative thinking, criteria trading, breaking a 4 day into 2 2 days so I could drop the day I needed, etc.

as someone who doesn’t mind getting creative it’s kind of useful that most people are clueless about trip trading mechanics, but at the same time it’s also pretty BS that it’s so user unfriendly.
