“We are moving as fast as ALPA will let us”
#41
Sorry for the thread takeover but need to respond… I think short call lines are a bad idea. I’m a commuter. I just went an entire 30 day period without being assigned to fly and was only assigned to do short call 3 times. The rest of the time was unused long call. NB, not GUM. This was amazing and occurred on our current contract. In other months when I barely fly I don’t get converted to short call more than 3x either. A full month short call reserve line would have been nightmarish for me compared to this situation.
To get back on topic, I agree that we are moving at the speed ALPA allows and I don’t think that’s a problem, so long as ALPA plays our cards correctly.

Read the section of the contract pertaining to short call lines. It sounds like you are going on bad word of mouth or the rules regarding short call lines at a previous airline.

20-K-6-i The Company may offer lines consisting of a Short Call assignment on each work day. These pure Short Call lines shall be awarded in seniority order only to those Reserves who have requested one.

Pretty easy to figure out, really. He can afford to retire from his old job at United because he now has a new job at United. The company is still PAYING him, this time to toss grenades, hide around the corner until they detonate, and then survey the damage.

Reserve is only one part of the captain problem. There are more people not bidding NB captain who could hold lines than those who would be on reserve.

like the 90 hour lines and every day is red so you can’t drop or trade. Every Captain I fly with says the same thing. About 25% of them are waiting for their 2 years to end so they can bid WB FO.

1. Avoiding red eyes
2. Avoiding non commutable trips
3. Bidding the credit range that you want, not getting stuck with what is left
4. Getting exactly the vacation slots that you want
5. The small difference in pay between WBFO and NBCA doesn’t justify the additional days on the road or the much higher work load.
6. You can bid better trips that are easy to advertise away regardless of reserve coverage
7. Former military pilots spent decades of repeated deployments, they have a pension, and want to make up lost time with their families.
There are others, but the coffee hasn’t kicked in yet.
