How bad is 320 flying, really?
Hello, starting in a few weeks. I've had some people tell me that the 320 is the regional jet of the company. I've had others tell me they rarely fly more than 2 legs a day. What is the general consensus? I know the answer generally comes down to seniority, but any other insight? Thanks.

I’ll answer for the newbie:
It’s totally hit and miss. Yes, you will fly 3-4 short legs (35-90 minutes) some days and other days a 1-leg, 5+ hour transcon. IAD/EWR - (any number of westcoast destinations) and sometimes all in the same pairing.
Seniority does play a lot into what one gets, but a lot of the bid pack lately is definitively more “in-house RJ flying”.
- UAL pilots have been complaining about bringing in RJ flying for 20 years and now that it’s here….well, people are complaining (just like pilots do)
I’ve never flown the 737, but I know I will have to - at some point in my career…hopefully not for a long - long time!
Good luck with your decision, and welcome to United!

The 737 does plenty of IAH-SAT, LAX-PHX turns also, though it can also do BOS LAX in the winter with an alternate.
Hopefully the “this is like an RJ” stigma will die fast. There’s nothing wrong with “regional” flying when it’s done in mainline airplanes by mainline crews, though some prefer longer flights as a matter of preference.
Also since this hasn't come up yet in this thread, in the 320 can cut your lighter choice beef on a tray table.

At least in EWR, you might see a 4-leg day on 2% of the trips in the bid packet, so 10/500. Other than the locations, the trip construction looks pretty much the same to me between the 737 and the 320. The big difference comes in the productivity at the top of the seniority list. You don’t do 8-hr turns on the bus. Occasionally a 7-hr, though.
