I guess I just don’t see anything wrong with the system as it is, & I certainly wouldn’t change the rules just because a handful of guys aren’t being courteous.

So the senior guy is supposed to yield his benefit because someone else deems his reason for travel to be more important? I’ve been bumped out of the JS, too, but I don’t begrudge anyone their reasons for going from A to B. If you think your purpose for travel is more important than anyone else’s I’d recommend purchasing a ticket.

You can already check in 12hrs prior for a United flight jumpseat, unless you mean check-in at the gate…. because everyone loves a foot race in uniform to the podium. As far as last minute listings….schedules change, plans change, weather changes. A primary flight cancels or is weight restricted now making a pilot 2 leg it home through an airport they had no intention of ever having to go through. Seniority is what we have all dealt with. That Skywest kid still gets on before me on his metal as far as I can recall. Be friendly be professional. Sometimes things don’t go your way, especially with American who’s gate agents never know how to find your commuting pilot booking.

If your seniority number is #1 you are willing to spend 0 (zero, nada, zilch) negotiating capital to fix reserve. If you are #15,500 you are willing to spend a reasonable amount of capital to fix reserve. (reasonable being more than none)
That about sum it up? Where one falls on that scale affects their thoughts. And again, you could be #3000 but on reserve in your BES, which would skew your thoughts toward more, rather than less, capital.
BTW If reserve isn't brought up to Delta, then that is "screwing reserves". Getting industry standard should have no cost associated with it if Kirby wants to be a premier airline. That's just the cost of doing business like fuel and maintenance and 18% contribution for DB on pay and profit sharing.

Or, you were hired in 2000 and still sitting reserve as a NB Captain. Yeah, it’s a choice…..in the last years of a career.

Seems my answer is different than yours. I still advocate for the hybrid Delta system.

As a mid-seniority guy, I lose as many as I win, & I never begrudge the senior guy who gets the seat. It’s pretty simple, IMO- seniority rules, but watch out for each other out there. If I’m the top guy & some junior or off line guy comes up to me & respectfully explains his sense of urgency for a particular flight, I’ll certainly take it under consideration. (I’ve deferred my priority when I felt the other guy’s situation was more important.) But if some entitled newbie wants to lecture me about why I’m taking his ride to work, guess who will be calling in sick that day?

No, I don't believe that, nor is that what I said or insinuated. Do you believe the JS, if unused for training or FAA purposes, was for non rev or as an aid to get to and from work?

I was senior at Delta when the booking system started. It’s a great system for commuters regardless of seniority because it adds certainty to a commute. At Delta we were also able to secure positive space in back if bumped off a booked jumpseat for any reason going to work. It’s a good system even if your senior.
I had completely forgotten about this... sending it to my reps for sure.
