How difficult is it for a junior employee to have success with non rev travel since United has a seniority based nonrev policy? Someone told me that they've had several instances where at the last minute they've had non-listed employees bump them down during the final hour before boarding. In one case a family of 5 appeared out of the blue. I'd assume that can't be that common, especially for international flights, right?

Also, besides normal ZED fares. Are there any other benefits if you nonrev on Star Alliance carriers?
My advice is be extremely flexible in your plans. I was in Rome one summer years ago and woke up to find our flight, that was wide open, was canceled. Ended up having to drive to Milan to catch the flight out of there. Also I have been stuck in random cities trying to get home so plan for a couple extra days. I’ve even flown into a city nearby and rented a car one way and drove a few hours to get home. Don’t think you’re gonna be back the 8th and start a work trip on the 9th. Nonrev is doable and an awesome perk of the job but if you think it’s gonna be smooth sailing every time you’re gonna be greatly disappointed. Also sometimes you have to bite the bullet and buy a ticket if you absolutely have to be somewhere at a certain time. Like we have a cruise coming up and I bought tickets both ways because nonreving out of the nearest airport is damn near impossible. Good luck and most importantly have fun! It can make for some pretty cool stories.

I was in the security line in Tel Aviv when our outbound flight cancelled. We had enough time to check StaffTraveler and make a new listing on Air Canada to Toronto and PHX. StaffTraveler app is such a great tool.

X 1billion.

A must if you do a lot of non-rev travel. Don’t know how we ever got by without it.
