There are some people on this thread that think this was no big deal and that this happens all the time. Maybe it is because they are just being supportive of their employer/brothers but in my view this was very close to a crash and a very big deal.

No there are many that see this as a very significant event but also agree that returning to OGG wasn't necessary either. Just because they aren't screaming "omg why didn't they divert" that doesn't mean they don't think it was a significant event.

If it was me, the options would have been continue to destination, or divert to HNL. It does seem we, here on APC, don't have all the info, so really can't pass judgement on their decision.

So what happens if you get into an enroute stall? Push roll thrust stabilize, the plane is recovered, now what? Immediately divert or talk about the situation, weigh your options and decide on the best course of action?

Interesting, a very expensive retrofit to datalink that kind of data real time both in aircraft and ground equipment. Large bandwidth needed. United might be the only airline to have done that. Eliminates the need however for FOQA recorders and mechanics to periodically pull that data from the airframes. Most airlines now do have the ability to downlink engine reports ect.. United is way ahead of everyone in having the data you mention. To bad MH17 was not equipped.
I can’t tell you exactly what parameters are being linked in flight but it’s a fair amount of information. I’ve had the company message us about a potential engine problem out over the South Pacific before it was giving us an indication on board.
