BStill, good info, thanks. Did they comment on a typical work schedule? Days off per month? 3 day or 4day trips? Typical duty day length vs overnight length? Etc...
I'm not against sitting reserve, and I'm not against working 89 hrs per month. I'm more curious how much control one might have over their schedule as a fairly junior guy (1-3 yrs).

Hey everyone, just got a CJO and planning on moving to IAD general area when I can…hopefully I get lucky in indoc and get a slot right off the bat. From what I’ve seen from the last few drops, most NB stuff is out of EWR or IAH. Any experience or opinions on how long it may take to get a vacancy bid over to IAD? My next question would be the mix of fleets at IAD and growth of the base in the future. Anyone have any info they want to share? Thanks!

If things continue, you will be able to bid to IAD quickly. You may get lucky and get it out of indoc - there were unfilled IAD 737 and 320 vacancies on the last big bid. IAD has every fleet at United. I did the IAD-EWR commute for a couple months - lots of flights from IAD/DCA and I could drive it in 3+45 if required. They also have the Metro Silver line expansion running between IAD and DCA. I hear about an hour to 1+30 to get between the two depending on the day.
Lots of rumors of growth at IAD and they just awarded a contract to build a new terminal. The links below has a few nice renderings - supposed to be complete in 2026.

you should get to IAD pretty quickly. Vacancy bid season is over for a while but you can try a base trade. 787 has gone unfilled, so you could be on that in less that 6 months if you want too, but you’ll be flying to LOS and ACC and our international reserve system makes regionals look good by comparison. I would hold out for the 777 or 756 if you want to fly international, and I’m on the 787. It’s a great plane but awful to be junior on.

It means that you will have to wait until the next vacancy bid, if it’s not offered during BI. There will be one again, though. They need to have them if solely to create vacancies for new hires.

But they have to run every 90 days minimum while the company is hiring.
Bottom line … worst case you’re in iad 6 months after hire
