Default South Africa Gouge

Taking my family of five to S.Africa tomorrow night and had a few questions for 787 crew who've operated it lately or any who've pass traveled there.

Destination is Cape Town but we are likely to go EWR-JNB based on comfy seats then ID90 JNB-CPT on South African (we have a lot of experience wID90 overseas)

- I've seen the JNB 20% seat block warning in EmployeeRes but has that been used, in execution, Eastbound lately?
- Any gotchas at JNB with customs/immigration?
- Anyone ID90/ZED South African Airways? They're Star Alliance but also in bankruptcy I believe...what could go wrong?

CPT:
- Are we blocking seats lately EWR-CPT?
- We're using the UAL rate at Westin Cape Town for a couple rooms...assume that's the crew hotel? Any hotel gouge? Marriott Titanium status FWIW.
- Any other United crew "deals" in Cape Town on activities?

IAD-CPT return:
- Blocking seats lately IAD-CPT?

- Anyone gotten stuck in RSA and used ID90 back via Europe who has routing recommendations?

Many thanks for any recent info! BK

Keep your head on a swivel for rioters and political violence. Have a PACE plan to egress if $#!t gets real real quick there.

Don’t take anything shiny, they’ll steal it in a second. Watch out for everyone, including the cops, they love to rob you too. Apart from that, it’s a great place. Enjoy.

Just as an outsider looking in who rarely travels outside the US, why do people go to a place where they have to worry about political riots, cops, street theft, etc? It seems like it’s more trouble than it’s worth, but I’m just one to stay in my area I suppose.

United has a partner airline over there called Airlink, they operate embraer RJs. I bought tickets going over and within for travel so I can't speak to non-rev travel but I was VERY impressed with Airlink. Three flights - all on time, clean and good food.

Key Takeaway: The waterfront in Cape Town is nice. Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope, botanic garden and wineries are worth venturing out to. Not much too see in Joberg, convenient though to Kruger National Park. For personal safety, use common sense don't venture off beaten path and you will be fine.

Thanks Oly2016 for taking the time for a reply with more than fear mongering. Yes, Cape Town, Table Mtn, Robben Island and the Winelands (Franschhoek). Good info on the SA carrier. Cheers!

Yeah, just returned from CPT, while there is a bit of unrest, nothing that would make you feel unsafe. Just as he said, use common sense and you’ll be fine. Enjoy.

Because there’s more to life than Cheesecake Factory and Hooters? Just a guess.
