Oh man, that is so true 😂😂. The outside perception from other western countries (from people who haven’t visited the US) is that it is a gun-toting free-for-all with people driving technicals mounted with 0.50-cals.

Cape Town is great, Johannesburg I would take a miss on. Only benefit of Johannesburg is that it’s central and people leave to the northeast from there for safaris .

Houts Baai is nice north of Cape Town. Robben island is like Alcatraz

I mean, that's why we love it here, right?

I doubt he’s going to be hanging out in places without generators. Barely noticeable in tourist areas.

We have an AuPiar that is from Cape town. After coming here, she wishes she never had to go back. She says while her country is beautiful, she never realized how much she had to be concerned about her safety there.

I can see that, living-in versus visiting SA are two vastly different positions. Friends and relatives who have travelled to South Africa all say it was, by far, the best trip they have ever taken. I can now say the same. While tourist stay in the tourist areas, those are safe areas. I too would not want to live there. The things that will stay with me the most from this trip are not the meals, or accomodations but mostly the people and their stories. Yes the safari and some views were AMAZING, but I will remember talking to our guides, learning about their history, traditions and apartheid and how it affected them. WOW! An incredible first-hand civics/history lesson. It's a different world. But it's on the same globe.

Bingo..

I flew a contract in South Africa with a Jo'burg basing.
Lots of crime in the area we stayed, nobody walked around alone after dark, hazardous to your health.
Would not go there on vacation.
