Hi all, congrats on the new contract. I had a question regarding instructing and the new potential wording of the contract. More specifically the “instructors can fly as captains…” part. Is that different to the previous contract? Could an instructor not upgrade while instructing? If so how will this work? I understand the 3 days of flying is built out of DEN…so is it referring to seniority holding captain in any base?
Also what are your thoughts on the instructor job if/when this contract gets voted in? Will it go more senior than one year on property?
I’m currently an outsider looking in, working as a NB captain for a (the only) major down under. Thinking about relocating to Denver where the wife is from and looking at all options. Have previous sim instructor experience so I’m interested in getting in to it again if United were to work out. Thanks in advance!

I am currently an instructor, and most people have "spitballed" that if ability to fly and get paid as a CA while teaching at TK gets signed into our contract, it will be very challenging to get hired at our training center. People will be able to commute positive space to DEN and get the benefit of CA pay for 6 months out of the year, so that will allow a whole new set of instructors that never considered it before.
As always, based on your experience and persistence, it's likely you will eventually get an instructor job. However, I definitely wouldn't "plan" on getting hired and getting an instructor job at CA pay after 1 year. This new AIP will likely change that dynamic.

you can apply for whatever position opens up no matter what fleet you are currently in. However having hours in the type you want to teach makes you more competitive. Once you are an instructor you can “paper bid” meaning you can put in for a vacancy and if you get awarded it, then once you leave TK you get trained up for what you were last awarded.

It should be as simple as knowing something about the equipment you fly on before you decide to teach it to someone else.

I never had to do this so if anyone knows differently please chime in. But I believe you are able to pick exactly which trips you want for your consolidation. Out of whichever base you want. Basically proficiency flying but for consolidation.
