Not true.

You 100% can use them, even with negative RES coverage, it just takes a few extra steps compared to using them to straight drop a trip like a PD.

those “few extra steps” include finding another pilot who is able and willing to take the trip from you. Not always as easy as some make it out to be.

Exactly. Takes a lot of shenanigans and a good friend or 2 that actually has room on the schedule to do so.

For those UAL pilots not understating what they are talking about, let me explain.

In a properly manned category, we would have positive reserve coverage, so we could use of the payback (PB) days to drop a rotation and still get paid.

When the reserve coverage is negative, we can't just straight up drop the trip.

So we request to drop, it gets denied but the rotation still shows up in open time as a "Qualified" drop request. A buddy in the same category picks up the Q trip and you can then have your PB day placed over the trip for pay.

If you have multiple PB days to use, you can then take the rotation back from your buddy via the pilot-to-pilot swap function, and then rinse and repeat the above cycle until all PB days are cashed in,
