I heard it was an order for 200 787-8/9/10 with -10 performance enhancements. It's gonna bring wide body CA down to 2yrs and open up CLE/MMCO/LAS 787 bases.
But I'm gonna do the regular pilot thing and grouse about how it's shortsighted of us that it's not an order for 747, 767, 777X, reintroduction of the 757 line, or some weird A330/350/220 order requiring a few new types to be added. Sadly this will only be the most advanced, fuel efficient, comfortable (ok, yoke) cockpit aircraft we could lay our hands on, competitive for the next several decades, and will swap out 767s that pay like 739s for 787s that pay like 747s.
TL: DR this order will be a massive disappointment in my expert opinion

Tlop,
The 797 doesn't exist and therefor will be hard to buy.
Boeing will need to launch a 737-757 sized replacement at some point but they don't have the money (or enough talent - engineers) at this time.
I think this buy will be 787s to replace some 767s & 777s. The 777 replacement will be a future drama played out between BA & EADS.
BA is running well behind EADS and this will only be exasperated if the Max 7 & 10 get canned, and or when EADS launches the A220-500.
Boeing needs to get their sh!t together if they want to compete.
Cheers,
UAFlyer

The 777-300s will be around for awhile. I think the 777x is off the table for now but will not be late in the 777x production cycle when Boeing starts to cut the price down. The 777-300s that United order were treated the similar way, wasn’t order until later in production. AA got their 777-300 a similar way as well.

So the 777-300’s aren’t going anywhere for a long time. It would be nice to see more 300’s (line still open) or some 777X’s in the future.

As for the 777xs. Boeing has quite a few on its order sheets, but there is some question as to whether they will ever be delivered. The plane is literally years behind schedule. Airlines find ways to operate around order shortfalls (777x) with different aircraft (A350). I think Emirates is ****ed that BA modified the type of aircraft they ordered in order to make the 777FX. BA does not have their fecal matter in one sock.

I'm just trying to point out that the 797 is like the Dodo Bird, Saber Toothed Tiger, and or a Yeti. All things that currently don't or have never have existed. If something doesn't exist it can't be rare.
