Closest the 787 gets to the 777 is the -10 variant and it’s only close, still doesn’t have the lift.
Fully agree. Other aircraft can definitely carry more, but we don’t know the numbers for actual cost vs revenue. We said that the 777 could never do what the 747 did, but airlines still phased the 747 out. Comparing the 747/777 and the 350/787 isn’t exactly apples to apples, but it’s just to make a point. I’d love to see our WB fleet consist of 787’s and 350’s, but it’s the bean counters that make those decisions. From a non-bean counter perspective, I’d like to see a 787 order to replace the 767 since the 797 isn’t going to happen, and a 350 order to replace our aging 777 fleet. The Max and Neo can replace the 757 and we’d have a pretty efficient fleet.

They're working on a more capable 787-10

From a risk mgmt standpoint, putting all your eggs in a single fleet brings a lot of risk. Multiply that risk by the dumpster fire Boeing has become.

it’s not a single fleet - maybe a single manufacturer.

others seem to do just fine with a single manufacturer … SWA, Frontier, Spirit etc

and dumpster fires are usually good for steep discounts. I wouldn’t be surprised if we paid not much more for many MAX’s than some ERJ175

I beg to differ. If it’s in violation of our contract then they can’t operate the aircraft period! You do realize that when UAL took delivery of the 747-400 they had to park them because there was no negotiated rate for the 747-400.

If we buy the A350 and if my info is correct. Then we have more leverage and never just put that aside. Time for us at United to raise the bar and stop relying on DAL to do so for us. It’s our turn!

Even cheaper when you don’t have to make payments on them for a couple of years because they’re grounded. (That includes the 787’s we’ve been waiting on that couldn’t be delivered because of “defects.”)

Hell if dumpster fire = cheap = win in your book, we should’ve been buying Sukhoi Superjets.

I meant that it won’t be an issue if they never show up.

I agree, but we don’t have a say in what they purchase, only what we get paid to fly it. I’d rather have hundreds of NEO’s on the way instead of the Max, but they went in another direction. The dumpster fire at Boeing has probably resulted in aircraft prices that would make management giddy and tilt the cost/reward ratio towards the 787 unless Airbus digs really deep to land the order. Just APC speculation though.

Understood. However still a good opportunity to educate others about our potential leverage and UAL ALPA history.

The unofficial rumor is 200 787s to make it one fleet type to replace the 767s and 777s.
making the fleet more efficient.
