They flat out said we needed to address the Capt vacancies. Opening MCO (maybe TPA) and LAS is to address this need. They have a huge vacancy coming to allow basically anyone who wants to be a NB Capt to get the base they want. They are going to deliberately offer more Capt vacancies than they need. Once they know where pilots want to live crew Scheduling will adjust the flying to where people bid.
Not telling you or other to take the bid or not, but you asked how, so that’s how, if people take bids vs waiting it out for better work rules in our next TA, then what reason does the company have for accepting our requirement for better work rules (reserve or otherwise)?

Ditto in LAS with SFO/LAX commuters.
IMO the goal with the new bases is simply shifting staffing elsewhere (the infamous Crew Planning shell game) as they know they can’t support the “fortress hub” staffing model in the expensive and less desirable (to some) coastal bases.
(Who knows? The new bases might even help with system recovery when the entire northeast (or SFO) goes on its ass with ATC and/or WX delays as the schedule returns to pre-pandemic levels.)
Bottom line: The company has a huge staffing problem now and they know it, and these new bases are proof of that. We have more leverage now than we’ve ever had.

Individuals may do as they please, but I’m pretty sure any concerted effort to leave seats unfilled would be illegal.

Interesting the company was covering by saying these bases won’t have any new flying. The growth for United next will come at the expense of spirit, JetBlue and Frontier. I think that is a huge reason for the MCO/LAS pilot bases but they won’t say it publicly. The ULCC’s are going to be hemorrhaging pilots even more now. They will be the next ones to come out with huge raises for their pilots.

100 percent agree, nobody should be shamed guilted. If it works for you good for you. I was trying to explain the reason why I think the company finally opened a pilot base in MCO.

Here is a thought. For all those morons that took captain bids in IAH..thank you. We just spent our union dues recalling LECs and here you guys are taking bids that were moved from coasts.
Seriously, No one should be MCO or LAS until we get a contract. Nobody should bid CA slots. Kinda late now..pilots will be pilots. 10 steps behind management...

No, the new bases will basically be running first leg into a hub and last leg out of a hub. So MCO will be effectively covering what were EWR or DCA trips, for example, with those two additional legs tagged on. So no additional vacancies created at the old bases.

They might
This is a seniority arbitrage play. It’s not that people don’t want ewr 737 ca, the dont want junior ewr 737 ca. So you create a way to move the top off newark and people who have ewr 737ca 50th percentile bids now move up

Except it won’t address that need. MCO will initially be all FL commuters, most of whom now commute to EWR and DC. So, all they’re going to do is create more captain slots in the northeast bases.

This isn’t only a staffing move. The company’s presence in the SE is lackluster and they’ve been missing out on revenue opportunities. A stronger SE position allows for more direct competition with regionals/majors that hold down a lot of the SE flying.

The impression i got from the town hall and the CRU was that there will be no additional service to the SE at all. It’s just shifting flying from other bases crews. I believe it’s purely a junior base staffing solution and a pilot recruiting tool
