Of course there will be an increase in flying...
Lets be honest for a sec. If we are increasing narrow body aircraft, they will replace some RJ's but will also add new routes. Might not happen immediately, but there can be no doubt that there will be new routes in the future. And that is a good thing.
Just like the new WB order... they can say that they are "replacement" aircraft, and some are.. but they will also allow for new routes to be looked at.
Also, keep in mind that they probably wont just retire a 763 the day a new 787 shows up..
These ARE great problems to have.
One Problem that IS NOT GREAT- an unhappy work force~

Personally I think it's just a matter of time until the flying goes to "other than hubs" from LAS & MCO. I get the "not initially" as the new domiciles are more to fix a seating problem, however I would think we will grow beyond that and open new routes and maybe destinations. Just my opine...

I really don’t think it’s even a “Coastal base unfilled captain solution” My money is it’s almost entirely a pilot recruiting solution. Come 2030, stagnation (compared to the next few years of explosive retirements) will resume, and i wouldn’t be surprised if these new bases are closed. I hope i’m wrong though, and that they’re planning new true hubs out of these cities eventually.

I think MCO/LAS will solve part of the NB captain problem in the sense that there are a lot of people that could be based at home now. It will probably only make the coastal captain problem worse, until some of these issues are addressed.

I think it's more of a reserve rules problem. People see how punitive it can be being on reserve, and just don't want to deal with it. It doesn't help when they keep moving the G-line from 12% to 22%.

i don’t think this will produce a significant number of new captains for the system. I expect a bunch of SFO and LAX CA to lateral to LAS. With nobody bidding SFO and LAX, those bases will shrink. The same applies to EWR and MCO. Maybe some current FOs living near LAS and MCO will now upgrade but is suspect that the systemwide gain is minimal at best.
