Wow, just wow.

78% unfilled NB CAs on this vacancy…

That is all.

Managements problem to fix

Yet the schedule still gets flown…

I think we might expect additional bases sooner than later. Let’s hope the reserve rules have been ironed as well.

After a friend of mine turned down United after being given a CJO in 2019 he went to Southwest because he said he would make Captain there sooner. He would be a Captain in any base if he had come to United. I told him he could still come to United and probably have 6,000 pilots junior to him in 3 years (which won’t happen at Southwest) but he doesn’t want to give up his “seniority”. I think he has regret of not coming over. He’s DEN based and lives there.

How are you figuring 78%? Yes there are 90 unfilled NB CAP, but they awarded 171 NB CAP. So doing math in public means its a net of 81 awards when they sought 115. Thats a 30% miss, not 78%

Your including backfills. So your "math in public" is wrong.

There were only 70 737 CA vacancies on this bid and 45 Airbus.

It doesn't matter that more than 115 were awarded CA on this bid since the vast majority of those were people that moved BES, and their spot had to be backfilled.

Your counting guys that either were already NB captains or guys that needed to be backfilled because they bid out of another BES.

Here's the breakdown - pardon if this doesn't format right in a forum

737
Vacancies Bid Open Bid Close
DCA 737 0 3
DEN 737 10 10
EWR 737 0 5
IAH 737 40 0
LAX 737 0 18
ORD 737 20 17
SFO 737 0 9

Total 70 62 (net gain 8 737 CAs)

Airbus
Vacancies Bid Open Bid Close
DCA 320 0 0
DEN 320 0 0
EWR 320 0 5
IAH 320 15 0
LAX 320 5 4
ORD 320 15 9
SFO 320 10 10

Total 45 28 (net gain 17 CAs)

Overall 320/737 115 90

So overall big picture, it's going to be really difficult going forward unless they want to grow IAH to the size it was 5 years ago. If they grow IAH, trips will be really constrained in PBS to the point where the trips will suffer and be more unproductive than management will probably accept.
This bid, while it gained "net CAs" only gained 25 net CAs, but made staffing in the already hard to staff bases worse in LAX, EWR, DCA, SFO.

There were only 115 advertised vacancies (BES) in various CPOs. Because of backfills more were awarded, but they plan a certain number of backfills (BES) and use those to create slots for training to staff the CPO (what we call a base)
