We have a pretty large number of first officers on all fleets who have been making some serious bank with all of the premium pay. For many, even line holding NB captain would be a pay cut. Kirby has said that the company needs to get the premium trips under control. If they can get ahead of the staffing levels and make all equipment fat on right seat reserve pilots, the premium flying will dry up. When that happens, upgrade will be more appealing than just flying a published right seat line.

I have no doubt that some pilots are not on a freeze and don’t want to be on reserve. That’s also normal.

Actually, in my base, 20% of captains are on reserve and nearly 40% of FO's are on reserve (yes, the FO number is really high because of the training backlog). It's gone from 10-15 PP trips a day a few months ago, to almost none now.

My point was on the money side ALSO. There has to be a reason to get people to upgrade vs living in the right seat of a wide body until the can jump the trash can. NB flying will never be 1 leg - long layover - 1 leg. I don’t have the answer but atm it’s a pay cut for senior WB FOs to bid NB CA. Plus lose a number of days at home. It may rub some the wrong way but I personally think there should be a larger compensation gap between CA and FO.

And both - qol and $ - may be required. I suspect the bigger issue is QoL though.
