Widebody pilots make more because a mistake potentially costs more. They're responsible for more lives. Narrow body pilots have less responsibility. Maintenance techs have even less. Maintenance techs make less than pilots because even though they sign their work they have far less responsibility and can't actually cause a hull loss. Their mistakes are cheap so they make less. It's simple economics.

MX techs can absolutely cause a hull loss, and their mistakes can absolutely be very expensive.

Every contract has to allocate payroll money to pilots as best it can, and thus involves trying to produce fair outcomes across fundamentally different types of work. Arguing that one one pilot is necessarily better or of greater value to the company is contrary to the point of union representation, in my opinion. We bargain for all pilots- not just the ones whose present roles make greater profits for the airline.
The single rate payscale is just a different approach to structuring pilot compensation than what we’ve done traditionally. I don’t hear a lot of guys at UPS clamoring to change that structure. Some really appreciate the flexibility to bid based solely on the type of flying they prefer without financial disincentives against certain operations. Understand, I’m not advocating we adopt that for ourselves; just pointing out that as a concept, it’s not inherently good or bad. But we certainly shouldn’t be making value judgements within our own ranks based on the arbitrary pay delineations of our current labor contract.

So you are saying that UPS pay system is BS?
UPS makes more money than any other company in the flying business.
The two tiered system would help to solve many of the United growth plans and compensate the pilots for the work they do and not for the work they did 27 years ago.
