Here comes the Hard Sell
June 26, 2022
Fellow United pilots,
After four years of Section 6 bargaining and repeatedly turning down inadequate
company proposals, we have finally achieved the UPA 2022 Tentative Agreement (TA).
This puts real money into the pockets of United pilots and improves numerous sections
of our contract. When accounting for all external and internal considerations, this is
the right deal at the right time.
The TA, approved by a 15-4 MEC vote, is an important step in our strategic plan and
puts us ahead of our peers who are also laboring to conclude their negotiations. It
takes leadership to move the bar higher and be first in the current pattern bargaining
cycle. By approving this TA with a nearly 15% industry-leading pay raise, United pilots
will be increasing our lead for others to follow. As history shows, the pattern will
continue, and we fully expect those behind us to push it even higher.
As the post-pandemic global recovery struggles to take hold, our focus remains on
improving the careers of United pilots and moving the ball forward every inch we can.
Even though the industry has enjoyed substantial gains due to post-Covid pent-up
demand in the second quarter, along with forecasted strong performance in the third
quarter, the headwinds of inflationary pressure and forecasts of a possible recession
still make the future uncertain. When we see an opening to capture economic value
this large, it is our responsibility to seize it. This TA represents the best Risk-Reward
decision to protect us on the downside and position us to capture even more gains on
the upside when the industry fully recovers, and United is executing on the second
year of its five-year United Next plan.
I understand that the changes, particularly in reserve work rules, are substantial and
complicated. Do not make this decision based on incomplete or inaccurate
information. Get all the facts about how this TA works from the experts who crafted it
by watching a TA Town Hall and reviewing the TA videos for each contract section that
impacts your life. Tomorrow, balloting opens for the TA. Before you vote, you owe it to
yourself, your family, your career, and your fellow United pilots to exercise the due
diligence a billion-dollar decision like this deserves. As always, the decision is
ultimately yours.
A majority of the MEC and I firmly believe this TA improves our contract and
strategically positions us in the pattern-bargaining cycle. Please join me and your
subject matter experts on the virtual Town Hall meetings starting tomorrow and every
day this week at 1600 CT. I'm looking forward to presenting the facts and proving why
this is the best deal for the United pilots now.

1.The MEC chair is elected by the MEC, not by line pilots, so line pilots cant recall him.
2. He took office two months ago, so majority of the TA had been negotiated prior to his assuming office.
3. Its the MEC who directs the Negotiation committee and votes to approve or not. The MEC Chair has no vote.

That's not good enough. His signature is on this TA. He doesn't get to endorse it while assuming no responsibility for the damage this does to our group, and profession, if this passes. Those excuses are not going to work.

im not saying he is innocent, and i think the TA should be voted down. But the blame lies with the MEC itself, not the new MC

All of them. The MC. All of the MEC yes voters. All of the NC. All of those who help sell this. All of them. They won't be able to walk away from this clean. They aren't working for us anymore. They are the larger threat than Kirby himself.
