Vacancy 22-11

We’ve already put new hires in WB equipment. Those that bid for and begin training in a WB, beware of what you’re buying. You WILL be on Global Reserve for 8 years at least. You will take your probationary training event in an airplane that you’re not going to fly. Another thing is that if you haven’t done much/any Class II or ETOPS previously, that’s another threat. It’s not difficult and only takes doing it a couple of times to get it, but that’s another threat.
Just some things to consider…

Thus is one of the reasons why I am hopeful to get a NB slot for the time being and no hurry for a WB slot to sit reserve on the costal bases. If I land it out of my control (NB slots taken up before my number is called for the bid, so be it and I’ll make work).
I do appreciate the insight.

If the commute works for you, I think that the West Coast 756 bases are a hidden gem. Its 90%+ hub2hub and Hawaii (you'll see some Europe / S.A. in open time periodically), and although the flying is a bit boring - there are minimal delays, and the vast majority of days only have 1 or 2 legs. Lots of DHs show up in Open Time too so you can deviate to/from your trip. Then, once you get some seniority, you can bid to a base with mostly Europe flying if you wish, and not have to go back to training. On the west coast it's almost exclusively non-augmented so you will get a flying seat on nearly every flight too so you can get proficient handling the jet.

EWR is actually more senior to get a line compared to IAD, that being said basically every base except IAH/DEN/ORD are available to new hires, and even those 3 will not take more than a few bids to hold. IAD is now mostly Europe, so it will be a lot of IRO flying initially. If the West Coast 756 does not work, and you will have to fly to EWR/IAD - I would echo what everyone else is saying though and bid 737.

There are 35 unfilled CA slots on the snapshot (out of 620 unfilled total)
Its only going to get worse. According to the latest crew resources update just for coastal hubs (EWR, DCA, LAX, SFO) they are planning 500 more Captain bids just on the 737 to staff next summer flying because of about 70 more MAX deliveries by the spring. This doesn’t include the people that will leave the coasts because they can hold ORD, DEN and IAH 737 CA.
Also you have 300+ WB vacancies they will need to fill (not including retirements) this is 800 more. These are going to go unfilled all day long. They are gong to have to remove the 500 hour requirement and put new hires in the left seat to fill them.
2023 is going to be an interesting year from a staffing perspective.

It is a sign of the times to have unfilled CA seats but it is not nearly as dramatic as we would like to believe.
