Two varying factors. Length of time and hourly rate affecting the percentage contribution. A vastly different result when you compare the projection of a 27-30 yo pilot hired now to a 63 yo pilot about to retire whose pension/esop was taken 20 years ago and forced to fund a retirement under bankruptcy wages.

Kudos to the FNGs hired into the current environment. I hope they never see a downturn. History says otherwise.

+1 most doctors and lawyers don’t have pensions. Stock options, pensions, and other high value tax deferred retirement vehicles are generally for upper management types who don’t get to work 4 days a week and then turn their phone off for 3 days. I’m not saying it’s not worth exploring, but you talk as though our current pay is completely absurd

Answer=Pilots. Show your advisor the DB and DC plans the the FedEx and UPS guys have. Hell, show him the DB and DC plans that UAL pilots had 25 years ago. What some think is unattainable is what we used to have. What we should still have.

I am not against a pension given the right terms but you are dealing with an untrustworthy company or an untrustworthy insurance company to accomplish that. I would rather build a trust of investment properties and index funds that I know will survive a few generations. It isn't just negotiating a "pension" it is the minutia with that aim to do it correctly. Do it poorly and it is cheap and easy but to do it correctly is a huge undertaking. I don't believe it is worth the negotiating capital. Pay me correctly and I will hire the estate planner and lawyer... I don't need fine print from an insurance carrier.

Exactly. Sometimes I wonder if people don't understand how good we have it.

x2. Our retirement is better than any doctor, lawyer, engineer, or investment banker that I know. We should be very happy with it.

I’m against any increase to retirement because it will be taken from money we could have now. We will have plenty of money when we are 65. I would like to have money now in my 30’s when I can truly enjoy it.

Nice career you and Pilot4000 have. Keep in mind United wouldn’t be around if it wasn’t for the contract/career gutting hit the pilots took 20 years ago to save this company. You’re welcome.

And chances are we'll both have to make the same choices over the next 20 years of our careers. But don't let that change your perspective on what we have now. Most of us are 1%'ers. Nothing wrong with that, but the majority of the country has a lot more things to worry about on a daily basis than we do.

You have to make north of 600K to be in the 1%. We're not in the 1%. You could double most of our incomes and we still wouldn't be in the top 1% And the majority of workers in this country don't carry the same level of responsibility that pilots do. Not even close. Have more respect for your profession.
