UAL rules are an abomination and an insult to professional pilots. Seniority means absolutely nothing when on reserve. The FIFO system is a joke and scheduling rolls the dice when assigning short calls and field standbys. Oh, and UAL is the only major airline to have Field Standby (also known as hot reserve). This is why there were nearly 90 unfilled narrowbody captain positions on the last vacancy bid.

I've said it before, with minimal cost to the company, just a few small changes to the contract would make reserve QOL much better. Talk to your reps and they'll tell you the same thing. Participate, and see what happens.

The unfilleds are due to multiple of reasons, not just Reserve rules:
- The very real possibility of losing an assigned winter or spring break vacation this year due to training conflicts. Covid restricted travel for two years. Folks want to go on their vacations.
- The notion that the vacancies will be a perpetual thing so pilots didn't need to bid on them if it didn’t suit them at the time. When one had to wait 20 years to hold Captain, any Captain vacancy even if it meant commuting, was seriously considered, Now that the time to hold Captain is a lot less, there isn't the urgency to grab it ASAP, regardless of domicile.
- And yes reserve rules. But even if you had the greatest reserve system ever, there would be those who avoid bidding it just because its reserve. They will wait until they can be a solid lineholder. No doubt reserve here could be improved. We used to have FSB lines. Those tended to go senior as you had a set schedule of them, and it paid better then “normal” reserve.

Not really…. You’re based where you’re based because you bid for that BES. An in base reserve should have first crack at picking up a trip before someone who is out of base. I don’t believe that it should be a system free for all!!! There would be a lot of complications if there were, especially for FMRS flights.

This doesn’t happen. Reserves don’t fly on days off. They might be able to swap a day to get a trip if their block is less than 6 days, but it is no longer a day off at that point.
