Meh. There are ton of alternate ways of developing leadership skills outside of just being in the left seat.

Experience is just part of the puzzle. Attitude, Stick and Rudder skills, systems knowledge, leadership skills, etc all play a part.

A sharp, motivated individual can make up for a lack of experience. It’s why we have SOP and an FOM. Experience can also be an Achilles heel with a poor attitude/Sop compliance.
Yeah yeah we can all cherry pick the outliers. More experience is 99% of time always better.

Want the dentist doing his first root canal, or the guy who has done it a thousand times?

Not the same, unless dentists work in pairs and alternate root canals. 1,000 hours in the right seat is more than enough time to build the skills you need. The regionals have been putting 1,000 SIC pilots in the left seat for almost a decade, I’d rather someone’s first experience in the left seat be in a highly automated, easier aircraft under the supervision of a world class training department than in a -200 with no autothrottles, stall protection, and a training department of people who were FO’s 6 months prior and have one foot out the door to a major.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one. As an FO and then in a training role I found experience was a generally positive indicator for skill/performance but certainly not a requirement.

Well to be fair….I’ve had 2 root canals. One at a specialty place with a very young doc doing the work. Electronic gizmos that could see into your soul and all kinds of crazy technology. Did a great job. The other was the old dude I’d seen since I was a kid using a standard dental drill and magnifying glasses. “Done this a million times” he assured me. Screwed it up so bad I needed to replace the whole shebang with an implant.

And I’ve flown with some older, highly experienced, entitled, lazy, complacent captains that were absolutely terrible.
