Here Comes Swayne 2.0

I know, right?!?!?!?!?!?
Tangential, and not a slam on Swayne. But I wonder if people that are doing the same things, whether he or others, had to suck of the dark decade would keep making videos? Going on about being stuck in the right seat at a regional for years, being income/career stagnant, being max's out on the RJ FO pay scale, downgrades/base closures, etc?

For Swayne, it's great to see a good news story, sure. But what's impressive to me is how he's captured his path and put it out there for the world to see, I think there's a lot of courage in that. I looked through his channel and found this gem from 9 years ago - a kid with a dream to fly. Who among us can't relate?

I commend him for his work and production skills. Seems like a good guy who's career timing is impeccable. He will likely be 767 captain by 27 yrs old! And yes I'm jealous. Maybe it's because I'm old now and Youtube wasn't there to document my flight training. Maybe because I got stuck in the regionals for years then furloughed then more regionals. Maybe because with kids at home I'm too damn tired to go exploring on layovers and just want to watch tv in my room after limping back from the gym. Maybe because my phone camera sucks and my laptop can't process a game of solitaire much less high quality vids. Maybe because he's experiencing the job in the way I thought I would be able to before the repeated kicks to the nads.
But I applaud him and I think he is a great ambassador for United and the profession.

I think pic is important. It is leadership experience. I remember going to career fairs for ual and they tell people to upgrade and get as much pic time as possible. Some just coast as fo

¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Who cares. When I was doing training I worked with first time captains who were better leaders with 25 hours of PIC than guys with 10k. It’s a potential indicator of performance but not necessarily evidence or a requirement for good performance. Someone with his attitude, assuming he’s a good stick (which I have no idea one way or the other) will do just fine whether his first PIC role is in a 737 or a CRJ.

I also bailed out plenty of 5k+ PIC captains on the line and flew with some spectacular low time captains. I’ve seen multi thousand hour PIC captains break out in a cold sweat and need hand held through a minor issue. I’ve seen low time captains handle serious problems with composure.
Experience is just part of the puzzle. Attitude, Stick and Rudder skills, systems knowledge, leadership skills, etc all play a part.
A sharp, motivated individual can make up for a lack of experience. It’s why we have SOP and an FOM. Experience can also be an Achilles heel with a poor attitude/Sop compliance.
