Not out loud, and certainly not to a CA putting out a “bring it up & face 4 days of uncomfortable silence” vibe. But of course they think about it just like you, me, and everyone else here did. And yes, you can learn the job & be aware of seniority progression at the same time.

no I’ve been at United for 7 years now, and seven years at a regional prior to that, I get how it works, it’s just irritating how the veterans are so against anyone trying to figure out what their future might hold as a new hire when all they are trying to do is gather info. Of coarse things change, but you can try and gather what info you can and seeing if your hopes are attainable.
You’ve been here 7 years feel free to post predicted upgrade times for each base. Knock yourself out, nothing is stopping you.

You might find my answer “coarse” but the simple truth is what I told you. It depends. You can plan on today’s numbers but you’d darn well have a back up plan when things go south.

Oh……the suffering you must have endured……..

I must be weird, I ask guys how close to upgrade they are and if they will take it right away. If it’s a “short” time….good for them.

so one poster said 2 years wasn’t enough, now 5 years isn’t enough, so how much is an appropriate amount of “suck” that one must endure to meet the standards of asking a reasonable question about what airplane/ base could potentially be available to a new hire? You know just questions about his personal future, no big deal.
The number of years at a regional doesn’t really matter. But just realize that anyone who attempts to elicit sympathy needs to know their audience - UAL has thousands of pilots who were furloughed twice and spent over 10 years unemployed. The “lost decade” left enduring scars even for those who weren’t furloughed, so just be cognizant. Don’t be that half wing sitting in the CPO flight planning area complaining about still being on reserve after nearly 6 months on property.
I’m not trying to poke you in any way or downplay your question. Just trying to explain why some people here respond the way that they do.

Regional time post FAR 117 should only count for .8 of an hour and regional time with two flight attendants to dampen the crazy post 117 should only count for .7

Time at the regionals was some of the most chaotic nonsense I have ever seen. It makes me appreciate what we have.

One of my least favorite aspects of pilot culture is the pain and suffering competitions. Some have had more suck than others, but with a few rare exceptions this industry doles out some major suck to everyone at some point. Aside from some obvious major faux pas (I once overheard a new hire ask a 15 year check airman why they hadn’t moved on to a major yet with all this hiring), I don’t understand why we decided that if you haven’t suffered as much as the next person you can’t dare to voice an opinion. Half these people just need some guidance. I pulled that new hire aside and explained how the industry was the past decade and all the various reasons someone could get stuck at a regional that long. He was mortified and immediately found that guy and apologized. No need for yelling, no need to give him the silent treatment for a trip, just some friendly mentoring.
