In case some weren’t aware of United’s response to the backlash, here is an article discussing it.

“All the highly qualified candidates we accept into the academy, regardless of race or sex, will have met or exceeded the standards we set for admittance.”
Hopefully this statement will diffuse at least some of the anger.

Aviation wise I never failed a check ride,phase/stage checks, no additional training in the regionals and became a LCA.

Yup but when you have no aviation credentials, how should you stack then applications for such an amazing opportunity which would maximize chances of success? I was highlighting United essentially said: all selectees will meet or exceed a standard (which has yet to be defined).... well of course, that’s like someone assuring you the sun will rise in the East tomorrow🤷🏼♂️

Whether you support this program or not, most people who have been in the corporate world can identify that’s meaningless doublespeak when you don’t declare said standard..... is the minimum standard a 2.5 GPA in HS? Does it mean a heartbeat? Does it mean a 4.0 and at 4 yrs in a foreign language?

Old white men are the latest fashionable targets for ridicule, huh? What wardrobe would alleviate your suffering (groan??) Life must be hard for you.
Identity politics 101: Separate groups by age, ethnicity, religion, politics, Financial status, whatever it takes to create division, distrust and hate.
From an old white guy (who does not wear Kirklands), I Find young people, old people and everyone in between, of every ethnicity, religion, nationality, and gender to be unique. Some more interesting than others, but never based on categories. With age many of us ‘old white men’ have decades to learn that prejudice is wrong on so many levels, the biggest of which is that you are usually wrong. Try giving old people a chance, you might be pleasantly surprised, Who knows, you might actually learn something

Well, doesn't the Aviate Academy already exist? If so, it seems from United's statement that the recruits under this program would have to meet or exceed the qualifications for acceptance into the academy as those qualifications are in effect now. Are you arguing that the recruits should have to exceed the qualifications of the other applicants in order to be accepted and trained under the program?
If their website said qualifications for admittance:
At least ____ GPA
Minimum _____ on your Private Knowledge exam
At least _____ on SAT (math)
Now you’ve set a standard and now that is no longer meaningless doublespeak and your post from United would hold credibility. Pros or Cons aside of this new initiative do you see my point?

Did any of you read the Aviate program flow?
Private pilot paid for, the rest out of pocket and graduate with a CFII, MEL. Cost just under $80k. Total hours somewhere near 300. Oh and no College Degree out of the program from what I read.
Move onto partner organization and teach until they reach 1500+ hours, then fly for RJ outfit and if the candidate has kept their nose clean will be offered the dream job as a F/O with mainline United.
My estimate total time from start to UAL 5-10 years starting from zero. But the needs of the service could reduce or even expand those times.
Just think about how many will drop out of the process along the way.
In the mean time UAL still needs to hire pilots and probably only a few will come through the program.
Will there be any significant changes in “diversity?” Probably not, because for the next 5 plus years there just won’t be an expanded pool of qualified pilots who fit the profile.
