I do think al the 767-400’s will go back in storage once the Pratt 777’s are back in the air.

I find this pretty unlikely

They will be around for a few years to recoup the gear overhauls and Polaris mods. Unless boeing gives a sweetheart deal for 78/77/max combo deal. The 78 has its own production issues as well.

Now that the 764 rumors have come true, does anyone know what’s going on with the 777 Pratt birds? According to my bud on the 777 he will be on reserve from a solid line holder for most of the summer in Newark. Nor sure if they are going to inspect all blades or replace them?
Who’s paying for all this? Shouldn’t Pratt and Whitney since it was their engine?

Pratt doesn’t have spare blades made is what I’ve heard... they apparently have enough for a handful of planes being swapped but need to ramp up production to cover the rest... not sure how long to gin up that production line.

Rumor from an excellent and well placed poster over at Airliners.net is that some more cracked fan blades have already been found on the P&W engines. If true, it does not bode well for our oldest 777s. Perhaps P&W will have to help us out finding a good deal on replacement lift pronto.

Any idea of what the economics are behind an engine swap? Great airframe. That bird just needs a great engine to go with it.

from what I have been told the 787 is the only airframe that can swap engine types, I don’t know why.

It is really, really tough for me as a pilot to say this on a public forum.... I don’t know ;-). I too have read elsewhere that the pylon on the 777 is specific to the engine, so more than just an engine to swap. Maybe some other carriers have already retired some P&W frames of a similar vintage that we could get blades from to tide us over a few more years. I’ve been thinking of bidding 777 but this may make more vacancies hard to come by.
