Default Unemployment for Voluntary Furlough?

Just wondering if people have personal experience to share in their states as to whether a voluntary furlough was eligible to collect unemployment.

Based on the replies from ALPA and the company that have been summarized elsewhere, it seems like they are not going to commit to an answer as some states may not allow it.

Some people are getting it in CA. You can select various covid-related reasons (child care, etc)

Not at UAL, just swimming in the pool, but I received unemployment in MN for the voluntary leaves I have taken at Endeavor. I just had to state that my VLOA was to stop other people from being furloughed. No issue with Minnesota at least.

Thumbs Up,

First hand experience: Voluntary furlough is treated as a furlough because it is.

A furloughed pilot is a furloughed pilot, no need to state anything else on unemployment application. You did not "ask" to be furloughed, you simply allowed the company to adjust the seniority order in which that furlough was going to happen anyways. If the furlough was to get cancelled you would still be here.

The company was going to furlough someone else on that day, and they furlough you instead.

United will report it as a furlough, and you should have no problem collecting unemployment.

Thats good to know. Reading the MN statute, they used a bunch of double negatives.

FWIW, no UAL pilot should be filing in MN. Unemployment is actually based on your crew base as that is where UAL participates in the unemployment plan. (Yeah, it's not intuitive.)

I wish that I did not have prior experience with this.

I can’t collect unemployment, but this is a stumbling block for people selecting VF as an option when the time comes. I only presented the question as it seems like many people are unwilling to roll the dice unless there is a definitive answer as to whether they can collect unemployment.
