From what I understand, you are only entitled to unemployment benefits from your base because that’s the State that you performed work in. I live in WA State and the unemployment benefits are far better here than in CA where I’m based.

FWIW, I can't state with certainty what is gonna happen this cycle but during a previous furlough my home state denied unemployment as they had no records of my "employment" despite the fact that my state taxes were payroll deducted and I filed locally.

Meanwhile, IL (my base at the time) happily paid unemployment to an out of state resident because that's where UAL paid unemployment taxes and reported.

... and that was a VOLUNTARY furlough, correct? That’s what the original question was about.

Yes, but it turned involuntary in short order. It’s obviously been a few years but if I recall correctly the difference only mattered internally.

All I can offer is the fact that the state you file in will validate both your income and your status with United. Part of the normal paper trail process. In the eyes of United you are furloughed.

Im trying to see who from the prior VF round filed for UI. Like me, everyone departed with another source of income ready to go that I know. If I hear anything back, I’ll post.

The one thing I wouldn’t do is speak to volunteering. Company was doing a RIF and you are in the group furloughed. Period

I could be either of those. Or I could be an old fashioned d-bag who believes someone with a college degree and a little bit of self worth would at least try to find a job instead of planning on taking a hand out, especially with this much lead time. Unemployment is supposed to be a stop gap safety net for people who suddenly find themselves out of work. 90 days notice of a layoff isn’t really suddenly unemployed. But that’s just my d-bag way of looking at things.

Like I said... I can’t collect it, but at most of my peer’s ages, they have likely put far more into UI than they would be getting out of it, FWIW. Good luck to all of us.

I wish that I did not have prior experience with this.
So for the tri state area you could file in DC if its a higher rate than VA or MD?

I’d guess no, since I don’t think DC has an airport within its boundaries that United serves. DCA is in Virginia, right?
